This report sets out the standards that are recommended for use by BGS in recording spatial
coordinates for the positioning of points, both in digital databases and elsewhere in other
forms of documentation. The recommended standards conform to internationally accepted
criteria using the latest state of knowledge of the shape of the earth. The report is arranged
in two main sections: one that contains the standards definitions and another that provides
background information on the issues that have been considered in arriving at the
recommendations and points to further reading
