This report describes the foraminifera from two samples of Chalk from the Newbury sheet. Both

are of a similar age, the early part of foraminiferal zone BGS18 (probably Subzone 18ii), which

equates with the lower part of the socialis macrofaunal zone, can be recognised. The basal

Newhaven Chalk is inferred

The basal Newhaven Chalk is inferred.    i IR/03/030  Foraminifera from two samples in the Newbury neighbourhood. 1 Introduction Two samples of Chalk (MPA51443-51444) were subitted for foraminiferal analysis.  Both samples contained a fauna characteristic of early part of foraminiferal zone BGS18 (probably Subzone 18ii), equating to the lower part of the socialis macrofaunal zone. 2 Sample details and selected foraminifera 2.1 MPA51443 (Field Number SU36NW1) This sample, from SU3424 6561, contained a diverse foraminiferal fauna including: Gavelinella cristata Reussella szajnochae praecursor Stensioeina exsculpta exsculpta Gavelinella stelligera Stensioeina granulata Eouvigerina gracilis Stensioeina granulata perfecta The presence of Gavelinella cristata and Stensioeina granulata perfecta are indicative of an age no older than BGS 18ii (WILKINSON, 2000), the lower socialis zone. The absence of species of the genus Bolivinoides indicates that the sample is unlikely to have derived from a position high in the socialis zone or higher.  A position above Peake's Sponge Bed (and lateral equivalents) is indicated and the basal Newhaven Chalk is inferred. 2.2 MPA51444 (FIELD NUMBER SU36NW2) This sample, from SU3144 6674, contained a moderately diverse foraminiferal fauna including: Gavelinella cristata Reussella szajnochae praecursor Gavelinella stelligera Stensioeina granulata Stensioeina granulata perfecta Cibicides beaumontianus Reussella kelleri The presence of Gavelinella cristata and Stensioeina granulata perfecta are indicative of an age no older than BGS 18ii (WILKINSON, 2000), the lower socialis zone. The absence of species of the genus Bolivinoides indicates that the sample is unlikely to have derived from a position stratigraphically higher.  A position above Peake's Sponge Bed (and lateral equivalents) is indicated and the basal Newhaven Chalk is inferred.     1 IR/03/030  Foraminifera from two samples in the Newbury neighbourhood. 3.
