Marple and Farideh Honary Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK s.marple@lancaster.ac.ukf.honary@lancaster.ac.ukIntroductionOur aim was  to  design a  complete  magnetometer  system thatcould be built by anyone with competent soldering ability andwithout   requiring  access   to  extensive  workshop  facilities.  Foreasy installation a battery­powered, wireless system was desired.The system we designed  is  composed of   two main  parts,   theremote sensor unit and the base unit.Remote sensor unitThe   sensor   unit   contains   the   fluxgate   magnetometer   sensor,microcontroller,  battery and a small   radio  transceiver  module.All   parts   are   fitted   inside   a   waterproof   enclosure   which   isconstructed from a 1m length of standard 110mm diameter soilpipe and partially buried. The single fluxgate sensor, analogue todigital converter and 5V analogue power supply are positionedapproximately 0.85m below ground to ensure a stable operatingtemperature   (typically   < 0.25 °C   diurnal   variation).   Sensing,timing and communication are controlled by a custom embeddedmicrocontroller, a derivative of the popular Arduino system. Themicrocontroller, battery and radio module are mounted in the topof the enclosure, above ground level.Microcontroller  board (bottom),   logic­level  interfacing and power supplyboard (middle) and radio module (blue, top). Data packets are sent from the remote system to the base unit,which replies with a message acknowledgement that includes thecurrent time, and optionally, commands to alter timing, sensingand communication parameters. The acknowledgement can alsoinstruct   the   microcontroller   to   begin   downloading   a   newfirmware image. All communication packets are signed to ensureintegrity against both natural sources of channel interference andmalicious, spoofed messages. A communication buffer can storeup to 10 minutes of magnetometer data samples for subsequentretransmission.   The wireless link has a maximum distance of50m. The sensor is switched off and the microcontroller put intosleep mode between samples to obtain approximately 4 monthsof operation at 30s cadence from the battery (2 D cells). Most ofthe electronic components are through­hole with some surface­mount ICs.Base unitThe base unit is a Raspberry Pi single board computer with aradio   transceiver   module   fitted   to   either   the   expansion   port(GPIO) or a USB port. A Python program saves the data to anSD card  and  enables  configuration  changes   to  be   sent   to   thesensor unit. The data is periodically uploaded to a central serverusing   an   rsync­like   protocol   over   HTTP(S);   real   time   datatransfer by UDP packet is also implemented.Power over Ethernet magnetometer Power   consumption   considerations   limit   the   battery­poweredversion to to infrequent, single­axis measurements. To counterthis we developed a power over Ethernet (PoE) model capable ofproviding   3­axis   measurements   at   5s   cadence.   The   fluxgatesensors   are   always   powered  which   gives   significantly   betternoise   performance   and   stability.   When   an   optional   GNSSmodule is fitted highly accurate timing is obtained from GPS andGLONASS satellites. The sensor unit can be located further frombuildings as  the maximum distance is   limited by the Ethernetmaximum segment length of 100m.Microcontroller board for the PoE magnetometer. Three­axis   sensor.  We   take   advantage   of   the   high­precision  with  whichPCBs are made  to avoid  the need  for  custom mounting hardware.  Eachsensor has its own ADC which enables simultaneous sampling for each axis.The battery­powered model uses a single sensor and PCB.Power over Ethernet magnetometer installation.  The sensor  is  buried fortemperature stability but the electronics are contained in a separate box forspace and cooling considerations.A simple Raspberry Pi magnetometer A  simple  Raspberry  Pi  magnetometer   for   indoor   use   can   beconstructed by connecting the standard sensor PCB(s) to a smallinterface board on the Raspberry Pi's GPIO interface. Single axisor   3­axis  measurements   are   possible.  The  maximum distancebetween the interface board and sensor PCB(s) is limited to 2m.Construction and deployment is simplified at the cost of baselinevariations  caused  by   temperature  dependence  of   the   sensor(s)and   greater   human   disturbances.   In   this   configuration   themagnetometer   is   functionally   identical   to   the   BGS   schoolsmagnetometers   (see   poster  Developing   a   network   of   schoolmagnetometers for measuring space weather e ects in the UKff )and is supported by the same data recording program.Data logging and visualisation softwareThe 3 magnetometer models described are supported with open­source   Python   software   for   data   logging   and   control.Visualisation,  processing and analysis   is  provided by an opensource Python library, auroraplot, which can be installed with thestandard pip installer.Comparison with observatory magnetometersThe performance of the PoE model compares favourably withthe BGS observatory grade magnetometers at Eskdalemuir andHartland. The plot below shows Pi2 pulsations that preceded amagnetospheric substorm.PoE magnetometer data recorded in rural garden location compared withobservatory measurements.Stackplot   generated   by   auroraplot,   comparing   the   observatory­grademagnetometer   at   Crooktree   (SAMNET   CRK2)   with   low­powermagnetometer   stations.   LAN1   is   a   PoE   system,   the   other   AWNmagnetometers are battery­powered.Further informationData logging software and hardware design files for the battery­powered and Raspberry Pi models:https://github.com/stevemarple/AuroraWatchNet/ Auroraplot library: https://github.com/stevemarple/auroraplot Construction and operating manual: http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/manual.pdf AcknowledgementsFaculty of Science and Technology, Lancaster University, whofunded the construction of battery­powered magnetometers forschools.  The STFC Impact  Acceleration Account  who fundedfurther development on the PoE model. We also wish to thank our collaborators who are operating thesemagnetometers,   Their   experience   with   the   installation   andoperation has been extremely helpful.• St. Benedict’s High School (Whitehaven)• Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (Ashbourne)
