MESSAGE FROMwww.ciltuk.org.uk 3Celebrating 35years of ‘Focus’RICHARD WILDINGhen you read this magazine, theInstitute that we know today as theChartered Institute of Logistics andTransport (CILT) will have been in existence for98 years. I don’t think that when Sir RobertLawrence sat down to write his very ﬁrst‘Message from the Chairman’ for Focus Vol 1Issue 1, 35 years ago, he could have imaginedthe current success and scale of our Institute.His message celebrated reaching 2,500members (we are now at around 18,000 in theUK) and that Focus was to be published sixtimes a year.Sir Robert Lawrence was, of course, theChairman of the then Institute of PhysicalDistribution Management, which over the yearsmerged with other institutes and become theCILT we know today; and much like CILT’srecent integration with the Institute ofOperations Management, we are all delightedthat our Institute continues to grow inprominence, membership and professionalrecognition.It’s always good to make time to take stock,reﬂect on our progress and consider the future.This is something we have done a lot during myﬁrst year as Chairman, as we head in a newdirection, introducing a clear vision and a clearmission celebrating that we are all involved inthe movement of goods and people and theirassociated supply chains through themanagement and design of infrastructure,processes, information ﬂows and effectiveorganisations. Interestingly, it is also 35 yearssince the term ‘supply chain’ was ﬁrst used inthe context we use it today by Keith Oliver ofBooz Allen Hamilton.In his original message, Sir Robert Lawrencereferred to the creation of the ‘physicaldistribution management technical library’.Today, CILT is home to The Knowledge Centre,an unrivalled logistics and transport library with more than 50,000 industry journals andinvaluable databases and catalogues that putsour individual members and corporatemembers ahead of their peers and competitors.Perhaps one of the most important ventures wehave started in 2017 is encouraging our PublicPolicy Committee to make its voice heard inWestminster and beyond. I’m pleased to saythat we have become an inﬂuential, impartialvoice around the Brexit debate, as we considerthe opportunities arising and provide coherentbalanced advice to government.The CILT Annual Conference 2017 will nodoubt be another huge success for theInstitute. The vast number of top-calibrespeakers who will be attending and the topicsthat these leading minds will be analysingshows the great strides that CILT is making tobe the leader in shaping our profession. It issomewhat ironic that I write this as wereminisce on years gone by, but this is anInstitute that is looking forward andundoubtedly inﬂuencing your future.  I ampassionate that during my term of Chairmanthat the Institute will become strong andsustainable for a further 35 years.It has been 35 years since the ﬁrst Focuswas produced and it speaks volumes for theplatform it has become that it is still aroundtoday. Focus is the touchpoint to the Institutefor many of our members and continues to beone of the primary vehicles through which wecan communicate with our members.Some things never change, so I will take thisopportunity to echo Sir Robert Lawrence’smessage of 35 years ago. CILT will onlycontinue to grow and improve its work if we allmake a contribution.
