The LandIS „Virtual Server‟ continues to provide good service to the project. The service team in the Cranfield University IT computing group provides a high standard of maintenance care and support.  Usage The Soil Site Reporter (http://www.landis.org.uk/reports/) continues to be used extensively with numbers steadily increasing. In the current period there have been 32 new companies and 454 new users registered. Importantly, and following a recent promotional campaign, this now includes 20 new Universities who have registered to take advantage of our initiative to provide free soil site reports made available as a general educational resource to all UK University Undergraduate students. This has included 300 new student registries. The Soilscapes viewer has received around 3,000 map requests per week over the last 3 months with a peak weekly request figure of 5,000. Summary of report types served by Soil Site Reporter Metadata The entries for the LandIS datasets presented via the „GIGateway‟ metadata portal (www.gigateway.org.uk) were reviewed for consistency.  The open-source software tool „GeoNetwork‟ (http://geonetwork-opensource.org/) has been further investigated to serve as a metadata server for the LandIS soils data holdings. Figure 3 shows a prototype installation of this software with sample LandIS metadata displayed.   Figure 3. Prototype GeoNetwork installation showing LandIS metadata  Further correspondence was held with staff from “Action 11601 - Community Spatial Information Network (COSIN)” and “Action 22004 – Soil” in the “European Commission - Joint Research Centre” to seek a conformity with emergent EU metadata practices. Work In Progress There are three more quarters to go before the end of the current LandIS Reference Site support contract. Over this period the LandIS team will be focusing on three areas: Completion of improved data product documentation  5  The set of soil data product descriptive pages completed to date has been collated together and passed for critical reading to senior NSRI staff.  Full metadata for LandIS products to be compiled into the GeoNetwork software tool Work will continue to transcribe the metadata entries for the LandIS soils datasets into the GeoNetwork format for loading to the prototype GeoNetwork server. It is anticipated that this server will ultimately be placed on a public-facing computer server.  Soil Site Reporter version 2 to be completed and launched The new prototype Soil Site Reporter software, v2, is now fully developed and functional and has progressed to the testing phase. It is anticipated this will be launched in Spring 2010. Defra budget used between 1st April 2009 and 31st December 2009  £4,725 was spent from a budget of £5,800 for 12 Defra projects.
