A number of in-depth qualitative studies have beenpublished that have examined patient experiences ofrecruitment and participation in trials. To understandthe collective insights from these studies, we undertooka meta-ethnography (a formal synthesis method for con-structing interpretations cumulatively across qualitativestudies) of qualitative studies published between 1996and 2010, focusing on people’s own accounts of theirdecisions to accept or decline trial participation. Oursynthesis highlighted how key aspects of the context,recruitment approach and individual approached caninteract to influence trial recruitment. The way potentialparticipants were situated in terms of their health statesand treatment junctures was particularly salient. Theirperceptions of their situation at the time of being trialentry influenced their judgements about the implicationsof trial participation for both their own and the broadercommon good.
