An algorithm of application of the wavelet transformation for analysis of single ion channel activity and preliminary results are presented. This is the first case of application of the method to one-dimensional time sets generated by such comparatively simple biological system as ionic channel. At present this frequency-temporal method of signal analysis is the most informative and pictorial in signal presentation and revealing some peculiarities in signal structure inherent in nonrandom processes. In contrast to the earlier used rescaled range analysis and fast Fourier transformation the wavelet method gives an opportunity to follow the process evolution and draw an inference about, first of all, stationarity of the process. The computer program was tested on two well known models of one-dimensional sequences (a sinusoid and the triad Cantor row). n the experiments the wavelet transformation was applied initially to a set of single pulse durations, τ (Ca -activated K channel) using the MHAT or Morlet analysing functions. The data obtained showed that the wavelet transformation coefficients (W(a, b)), firstly, altered in time (in random or quasiperiodic manner), and secondly, the plane picture of the W(a, b) values was irregular and appeared as so-called fractal "trees" created by the coefficient maxima and minima. The wavelet analysis of sets of interpulse durations, τ, or sets of alternating τ and τ values gave similar results. Thus, the results obtained showed that the single channel activity is irregular in time (nonstationary), it has fractal (hierarchic) structure, and in some cases it contains a deterministic component (low-frequency sinusoidal modulation). The data agree with the results obtained earlier using the rescaled range analysis and fast Fourier transformation
