The objective of MAPS is to define and develop an interface for amputees that can gather relevant physical data concerning a residual limb over a period of time in normal activity. The data will be sent by telematic methods to clinical staff at the rehabilitation centre for evaluation. The principal scientific questions being addressed are: (1) can a package of measuring devices, specifically a sensor socket, be built whose routine application contributes to design for improved performance and comfort of a prosthetic lower limb? (2) What are the factors that influence the quality and safety of a prosthetic lower limb? (3) What are the clinical requirements (sensor socket specification, SES) for a device to measure these parameters? This paper presents the initial phase of the project, during which the clinical partners in the project have reviewed the scientific literature and analysed their own experience concerning the clinical value of various parameters concerning the wearer and the conditions at the prosthetic stump/socket interface.
