The origin of variation is addressed from the perspective of the domestication process and the influence of the environment, cultures and production systems as entities that generate variants in chayote (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw), whose morphological variation is dynamic and evolutionary process is continuous; and this is attributed both to the consumer and to climate change, the pressure that generates variants of anthropocentric interest and adaptation to new environments or conditions. A series of inter-specific crosses were carried out between the wild types: S. edule, S. compositum and S. chinantlense, showing that the morphological variation in chayote is dynamic and its evolutionaryprocess is continuous, proof of this is that the wild, semi-domesticated and domesticated variants coexist and are crossbreeding naturally, thus promoting new variantsEl origen de la variación se aborda desde la perspectiva del proceso de domesticación y la influencia del ambiente, las culturas y los sistemas de producción como entes generadores de variantes en chayote (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw), cuya variación morfológica es dinámica y su proceso de evolución es continua; y se atribuye tanto al consumidor como el cambio climático, la presión generadora de variantes de interés antropocéntrico y adaptación a nuevos ambientes o condiciones. Se realizó una serie de cruzamientos interespecíficos entre los tipos silvestres: S. edule, S. compositum y S. chinantlense, registrando que la variación morfológica en chayote es dinámica y su proceso de evolución es continua, prueba de ello es que los silvestres, semidomesticados y domesticados coexisten y se están cruzando de manera natural, promoviendo así nuevas variantes
