Introducing the Annual ‘Women inInternational Law’ SymposiumSpyridoula Katsoni 2022-03-08T10:00:22On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on the8th of March, Völkerrechtsblog celebrates women in international law with theestablishment of the annual ‘Women in International Law’ symposium. The latterwill be taking place during the week of the 8th of March every year and will behosting blog posts, interviews and/or podcasts on topics relating to women’s rights,feminist approaches to international law and the struggles of female scholars ininternational legal academia. This year, the symposium will host a series of blogposts on women’s reproductive rights, feminist approaches to international law, andthe gendered impact of conflicts on the right to leave a country.A series of blog posts on women’s reproductive rights will kick off the symposium. Inthis context, Eva Maria Bredler will illustrate how the adoption of a non-discriminationanalysis in the reproduction-related jurisprudence of the European Court of HumanRights would contribute to reproductive justice. Subsequently, Lea Bilke, VanessaBliecke and Ella Schönleben will explore access to abortion in Latin America throughthe lens of the relevant jurisprudence of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.Satang Nebaneh will then provide an overview of the status of reproductive healthand rights – particularly of access to abortion – in Africa, while Ramya Kudekalluwill view India’s forced sterilisation practices through the lens of international humanrights law.After the above analyses on women’s reproductive rights, Rohini Sen’s contributionwill illustrate new perspectives to the perception of feminist approaches tointernational law and will highlight their significance in the pedagogy and knowledgemaking of international law. Finally, Pia Lotta Storf will underline the genderedimpact of conflicts on the right to leave a country and Vasuki Nesiah will point tofeminist engagements in the field of peace and conflict.We wish all of you an exciting read!- 1 -
