Very low fish catch was recorded atChettuva Fisheries harbour prior to the formationof mud bank. A sudden increase in catch after onsetof mud bank formation prompted many fishers fromnearby fishing villages such as Kalamukku(Ernakulam district); Chettuva, Azhikode andThalikulam (Thrissur district) and Ponnani(Malappuram district) to temporarily migrate tothese fishing grounds during the periodreported.Ring seiners, motorised mini trawlers andnon-motorised crafts were operated. Motorisedwooden mini trawlers with either double or singleoutboard motor, with each boat having 9.9 hp powerwere also employed for fishing. Since mini trawlwas operated with two attached crafts, it waslocally known as double net. 50 fishing crafts wererecorded during the survey which comprised 45Thanguvala, 1 Choodavala (ring seine nets) and 4double net (mini trawl) units. Fishermen went tofish in the early morning by 0430 hours and wereinvolved in fishing about 4-5 hours daily. The fishingground was reported at 2 km west of ChettuvaFisheries harbour with a depth range of 5-6m.Landing of catch started from 0830 hours andcontinued up to noon. Catch was dominated byshrimps, mainly Metapenaeus dobsoni whose sizeranged from 200-300 numbers per kg. Pelagic finfish was second largest component includingRastrelliger kanagurta, Stolephorus spp.,Opisthopterus tardoore, Dussumieria acuta,Tripauchen vagina, Thryssa spp., Megalaspis cordylaand Scomberoides spp. Minor catch ofJohnius spp.,Otolithes spp., Alepes spp., Ambassis spp., Lactariuslactarius, Alutera monoceros, Arius spp.andLagocephalus spp. was also recorded during thesurvey. Molluscan catch was absent, except smallvolumes of Photololigo duvaucelii with a size rangeof 5-6 cm. Metapeneaus dobsoni, Opisthopterustardoore and Escualosa thoracata were the majorcatch of double net. The price of Metapenaeusdobsoni of 250-300 count varied from `  190-200 perkg while  Rastrelliger kanagurta was was sold at` 110 per kg.It was observed that price for allcatches was higher than that of other seasons insame year.Catch was less compared to previous mud bankfisheries. The heavy by-catch of jelly fish was atroublesome issue in net operation and affectedtime used for sorting and size grading of the fishcatches in the harbour. All jelly fish were discardedafter sorting the catch as it lacked local marketdemand, and caused hardship to the fishers.Mortality of olive ridley turtles during nesting season along Chennai coastJ. These turtlesapproach the beaches for nesting in the Tamil monthof Panguni and have thus derived the local name“Panguni aamai”.  As in every year, with the onset ofannual nesting season in early 2017, mortality ofturtles along the Chennai coast was recorded.
