RaoField Centre of CMFRI, Alibag, MumbaiA visit was undertaken in and around Alibag whichwas reportedly affected as a result of spillage of oil inthe sea due to collision of two ships near  JNPT Port.It was noticed that there were huge quantities oftea/coffee powder bags, biscuit packets and emptyplastic bags soiled with oil, spread all over the beacharea of Navgaon, Thal, Mandwa, Saswane and RewasBodni. At Saswane, two containers full of tea,  coffeeand biscuit packets were washed ashore. At Mandwa,two huge containers were found floating around thebeach area.  At Rewas Bodni and Navkhar,approximately 45 bottles found containing phosphineOil spill from the ship MV Rak at Raigad region of MaharashtraRamesh B. The oil slick was seen in most of theplaces at Raigad region and it affected most of thebeaches like Korlai, Borli-Mandla, Nandgao,Tara Bandar, Thal and Saswane and a large numberof tar balls and oil patches were noticed on the beachesduring the month of August 2011.  At Nandgao LandingCentre, two gillnet boats which went for fishing,returned with no fish catch and the nets were full oftarballs and oil. Fig. 1. Road, Worli, Mumbai-18,  Factory: 3-11GIDCO, Gujarat, India”, were seized by the MandwaCoastal Police on 10th and 11th August, 2010.Many local villagers were found collecting the tea/coffee powder packets from the sea and drying themon the beaches. The local people were made awareof the hazardous nature of the contaminated materialfloating in the sea due to spillage of oil/chemical fromthe collided ships.by the fishermen. Inspite of the state Governmentwarning, regular catches of dolnets / boxnets and handtrawling were reported at Alibag, Thal, Saswane,Mandwa, and Rewas jetty landing centres during thisperiod.      No oil spill or fish mortalities were noticed in theRaigad District except in Uran Taluka, where marinelife as well as mangroves and other plants wereaffected due to spillage of oil and hazardouschemicals.
