Thiscollection was a part of inventori-zation of marine mammals from theIndian seas. (PNP Division & FEMDivision)‘Fishy Poacher’ at work again  ……The attack by the smooth-backedblowfish (Lagocephalus inermis) onthe cephalopods caused significantloss to the export industry.  Squids,cuttlefish and octopus were severelydamaged by this fish which resultedin their lower market value. To makematter worse, the cephalopod catchesduring October-December 2005 werepoor compared to those of thecorresponding period of last year. (Calicut Research Centre)Heavy landings of Scomberoides commersonnianusHeavy landings to the tune of3.8 t Scomberoides commer-sonnianus by hooks & line werenoticed at Chennai coast, inOctober 2005.  Though hooks &line are operated mainly for seerfish and caranx, S. commer-sonnianus dominated the catchlanded by this gear. At Kovalamlanding centre, heavy landings ofS. commersonnianus were recorded on 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th and19th October 2005. The catch was sold at Rs. 40/- per kg. (MadrasResearch Centre)Skipjack specimen of 9.25 kg landed at MinicoyKatsuwonus pelamis measuring 74 cm in FL and weighing 9.250kg was landed by a pole and liner on 29th November, 2005.Skipjack of  74 cm length has not been recorded for the last 5years.
