kg (Table-1), estimated catch was 316 t and the estimated numbers was about 8301763

The dorsal and analfins are large and look like paddles. Everyday 150 to 200 trawlers operate in thedepth range of 14-80 m.  The trawl catchconsists of adults and juveniles of penaeidand non-peneid prawns, ribbonfishes,sardines, sciaenids, Decapterus, mackerel,flatfishes, whitebaits, lizardfishes,threadfin breams and a wide variety ofmisellaneous fishes and non-target benthicbiota.During August- December 2005, a largenumber of juveniles of the grouperEpinephelus diacanthus was landed by thetrawlers. The total length rangedfrom 85 - 180 mm and weight 10-78g. Thestomach of most individuals was full withcrabs, stolephorus and Squilla. Theoccurrence of juveniles of groupers in largenumbers in the coastal shallow waters ofNeedakara might be due to the promimityto the freeding ground and their coastwardmigration for feeding.
