gillnet), operated near Thangachimadam, in Palk Bay,

The first batch is envisaged tocommence during the first week of August 2008.On 09-05-2007, 1000 kg of Sardinella longiceps waslanded in a single unit of Choodai Valai (Sardinegillnet), operated near Thangachimadam, in Palk Bay,at a depth of 10 meters. The net was operated from aVallam fitted with an inboard engine, at a distance of 5km. from the shore, with the help of 3 persons. Thelength of S. longiceps landed ranged from 11 - 17.5 cmwith a modal length of 12-13 cm.  50% of the specimensbelonged to the length range of 12 - 13 cm. On anaverage one fish weighed 9 gms.Unusual landing of Sardinella longiceps at Pamban inRamanathapuram district, Tamil NaduOut of 40 units of Choodai valai landed on 09-05-2007, heavy landing of S. longiceps was noticed in 4units and in these 4 units, the other sardinescontributed only  negligible proportions. In the rest ofthe sardine gillnet units, the species compositioncomprised mainly of the usual catches of Sardinellagibbosa, S.albella, S.longiceps, Upeneus spp.,Pellona ditchela, Thryssa spp., Stolephoruscommersoni, Dussumieria acuta, and Sphyraenaobtusata; of which S. gibbosa and S. albella togethercontributed about 95%.Molly Varghese, C.Kasinathan and P.Villan,Mandapam Regional Centre of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Mandapam Camp.Epinephelus flavocaeruleus landed by agill net at ChennaiBlue and Yellow grouper, Epinephelus flavocaeruleuscaught in a gill net off ChennaiOn 18-07-2007, s single specimen of the Blueand Yellow grouper, Epinephelus flavocaeruleusShoba Joe Kizhakudan and S. Rajapackiam,Madras Research Centre of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Chennaiwas observed in the landings by a mechanized gillnet, at a depth of 30m. Although this fish has beenreported from Lakshadweep Islands, the west coastof India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, thereis not much information on its availability andabundance along the east coast of India. A singlespecimen has been earlier reported to have beencaught in a trap near Appa island in the Gulf ofMannar in September 2006. The present report isthe first record of this species in the commercialfish landings at Chennai.
