Mainly motorized craft only issuitable for this gear because of netoperating time is very less between 15 and20 minutes. It is informed thatthese are mainly collected by the skindivers engaged in chank fishing during off-season and sells at a cost of Rs.1 - 1.50/-per piece depending on the size. Aftercollection, the specimens are washedthoroughly in seawater to remove adheringsand and other extraneous particle and sundried (Fig.1). Some traders are givingformic acid treatment before drying toavoid off odor, while storage and also toretain the colour and beauty for long time.The dried starfish is procured by thevendors from Kanyakumari, Rames-waram, Keezhakarai and Chennai atRs.2-3/- per piece. Per day an average of200-300 pieces are being collected duringpeak season and is considered as cheap butPerumallapuram, Konapapapeta andUppada.
