T h e l ibrary has m a d e a c o m m i t m e n t to do ing its u t m o s t to add to the co l lect ion every w o r k f r o m b o t h G e r ­m a n y a n d a b r o a d that h a s b e e n wr i t ten i n these discipl ines. T h e art h i s t o r y col lect ions o f Heidelberg Univer ­sity l i b r a r y go back to the 19th century. T h e y cover the ful l range o f medieval a n d m o d e r n art h i s to ry i n Europe as wel l as in the U n i t e d States, C a n a d a a n d Austral ia , i n so far as it was u n d e r European i n f l u ­ence, f r o m the Early Chr i s t i an era u p to 1945. T h e Univers i ty L i b r a r y buys the c o m p l e t e p r o d u c t i o n o f relevant l i terature ( inc lud ing n o n - b o o k m e d i a ) o n architecture, sculpture, pa in t i ng a n d all branches o f crafts. U r b a n architecture a n d the preservat ion o f historic m o n u m e n t s (seen f r o m an art history v i e w ­po in t ) , art exh ib i t i ons and industr ia l archeo logy are also represented. F u r t h e r m o r e there is a f o c u s o n general a n d comprehens i ve publ ica t ions i n the f ie ld o f aesthetics. T h i s applies to art aesthetics, art p h i ­losophy, art psychology, art t h e o r y and general art didactics. T o d a y Heidelberg Univers i ty Library ho lds a r o u n d 1,300 periodicals o n art a n d art history. T h e entire co l l ec t i on a m o u n t s to 290,000 vo lumes . Today m o s t o f the art l i terature i n Heide lberg c a n be accessed electronical ly ( w i t h a few gaps for i t ems p u b l i s h e d be tween 1963 a n d 1965).
