Knowledge state of sexual reproduction of coral Acropora nobilis and Pocillopora verrucosa from Indonesian Waters

Abstract

artikel ini sdh diterbitkan di Jurnal Torani, Edisi Desember 2006Sexual reproduction of hard corals in many coral reef locations showed variety in type\ud and reproduction time. The aims of this research were to understand the reproduction state of\ud corals Acropora nobilis and Pocillopora verrucosa from Barranglompo Island (South Sulawesi,\ud Indonesia) and compare the data of the same species situated in subtropical waters. This\ud research was conducted based on histological approach. Gonad structure and gonadal\ud development stages of the two hard coral???s species that sampled based on moon phase were\ud examined. The results show that both Acropora nobilis and Pocillopora verrucosa reproduce\ud sexually by spawning. The spawning of A. nobilis held in full moon and new moon, but only in\ud new moon for P. verrucosa. Consistency in reproduction type was showed by A. nobilis from\ud both tropical and subtropical regions. However the spawning time that was conducted only on\ud full moon in subtropical areas, happened on the full moon and on the new moon in tropical\ud region. In contrary P. verrucosa was reproduced in the new moon only for both regions but\ud showed a variety in reproduction type. P. verrucosa from Central Pacific was reproducing\ud through brooding while the same species from Indo-pacific was reproduced by spawning
