Yamashita,SPring-8, Hyogo, JapanAbstractA third generation light source, SPring-8, has beenproviding high brilliant X-ray beams to experimentalusers.   Beamline control system in the SPring-8 isdesigned to achieve the independent tuning of insertiondevices by beamline users.   The system is designedadopting the same control framework of the SPring-8storage ring in order to realize smooth operation betweenfacilities.   Beamline users control the equipment bysending control commands to a server process which isrunning on a beamline-managing computer.   Thecommunication is performed either by serial line orTCP/IP sockets over Ethernet.   Introducing firewallsystems to the beamline user’s network protects thebeamline network security. The secure networkguarantees both safety equipment controls at higher leveland realizes data transfer from on-site data taking machineto off-site computers via network.   In this paper, we givethe basic design and present an outline of the beamlinecontrol system at SPring-8.1  SYSTEM DESIGNIn SPring-8, the beamline control system supports afront-end, an X-ray transport channel, an interlock systemand an insertion device (ID) [1].   Beamline users are ableto control all of the beamline components by the samesoftware framework which is provided by the controlgroup.   The beamline users may use a system of theirchoice for the experimental stations.   The beamlinecontrol architecture is designed to realize the independenttuning of insertion devices by beamline users, whichallows flexible operation of IDs without interference tothe storage ring (SR) operation.The beamline system is designed using the controlframework of the SPring-8 storage ring [2] which is builtusing the so-called Standard Model concept.1.1  Conceptual designAt SPring-8, the IDs are considered a part of thebeamline, so the beamline users can change the gap of theIDs as a tunable parameter. BLIS is designed to be highly safe and simpleto operate.   The design concept of the beamline control issummarized as follows:(1) Smooth integration of the interlock and the controlsystem.(2) Manage all the information through the networkwith high security.(3) Sophisticated software design for easy maintenanceand user orienting.(4) GUI-based applications with unified look & feel.1.2  Computer and data acquisition systemsThe computing system of a beamline consists of abeamline-managing computer (BL-WS), experimentaluser’s computers, and VME-based board computers (BL-VME, ID-VME).   As shown in Figure 1, a typicalbeamline computing system has four computers as BL-WS (HP9000/B132), BL-VME (HP9000/743rt), BL-X(PC compatible UNIX) and ID-VME (HP9000/743rt).   Aprogrammable logic controller PLC (Mitsubishi Q2A-series) is also installed at each beamline.   The BL-WSand BL-VME manage all beamline components.   Thebeamline operation terminal (BL-X) is connected to theBL-WS, which is prepared for an experimental user.Several controllers such as ID gap controller or rfBPMcontroller are managed by the ID-VME.   A PLC, whichare weakly linked to each other using the network, is usedas the core system of the BLIS.   A RS232C serial line isused to communicate between the BL-WS and the PLCfor data acquisition from the BLIS.   The same dataacquisition software, poller/collector of the storage ring[3], takes all of the beamline data such as ID gap andvalve status and other information.   The beamline data isalso stored in the SPring-8 database system managed bySybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 11[3].Two server processes on the beamline controlworkstation, request server (RS) and command interpreter(CI), are newly introduced to the control softwareframework.   Figure 2 shows the software architecturewith the RS and the CI.   The RS is the server software,which manages user’s command requests sent from eithera serial line or the Ethernet.   It accepts a high-levelcompound command and forwards it to the CI.   The CIreceives the compound SVOC message issued from user’smachine or operation GUI then translates and decomposesit to a set of primitive SVOC messages.   For example, itis used for the cooperative operation such as amonochromator and x-ray energy.   Table 1 shows anexample of a monochromator control with the CI.   Aseries of primitive messages are sequentially passed to theaccess server (AS) according to the control sequence.The introduction of the CI reduces the number of SVOCmessages sent from user machine. Optical fiber Ethernet is used for backbone ofthe BL-USER-LAN  with 100Mbps band-width.   A RJ-45 plug socket with 10BASE-T was supplied for eachbeamline.   The firewall system is introduced to protectthe network security at the SR(BL)-LAN and the BL-USER-LAN.   A BL-USER-LAN in the experimental hallis a protected Demilitarized zone opened for experimentalusers.   A laboratory public OA-LAN is connected to theinternet directly via a router.   The firewall systems areinstalled to interconnect those LANs with reasonablesecurity and usability.   The beamline users controlbeamline equipment safely using access control providedby the virtual LAN function.   The experimental data canbe sent out from the experimental hall to off-site homeinstitutes via the network.   The system is flexible enoughto impose any suitable security rules and the networkperformance is satisfactory.   We install a security policysuch that no access from outside of the laboratory isallowed to reach the protected network zone.1.4 Interlock systemThe BLIS is constructed by hardwired relays and PLCinterlock modules.   Any software on WS or VME is notplaced in the interlock sequence for better human safety.The BLIS status of the beamline is taken independentlyfrom each other to be able to support independentconnection / disconnection of each interlock sub-system.The new interlock system for beamline and rfBPMinterlock system are introduced.   The rfBPM interlocksystem consists of modules of beam position alarm(BPA), and gap alarm (GAPA).   The BPA monitors theelectron beam position near the insertion devices in thestorage ring. The GAPA, connected by optical bus to eachother, judge the abort condition by using several pieces ofinformation such as storage ring current, gap status ofwhole insertion devices and the signal from the BPA.Whenever the electron beams shifts from the normalposition under specific condition, the interlock systemaborts the stored beam within 800 µsec.2  SUMMARY AND PLANThe beamline control system is highly functional andworking quite stably in SPring-8.   The independenttuning of IDs is satisfactory for experimental users.According to the user requirements, we are planning toupgrade the beamline network system to have higherthroughput and wider bandwidth.   The backbone of thenetwork system will be upgraded from 100Mbps to 1Gbpsthis winter. The throughput of the data transfer will begreatly improved.There is an announcement that the VME CPU board,HP9000/743rt, will not be available after this autumn. Wehave decided that it is necessary for the softwareframework to migrate to another CPU board, such as theIntel CPU family.
