Since then,differences in design philosophy, inconvenience tomaintenance staffs, and other inherited aspects have led tothe replacement of the old MULTIbus based local systemwith VMEbus based Intelligent Local Controllers (ILC).This change, it enables us to integrate the booster controlsystem into the storage ring’s system. This means the twooriginal heterogeneous and unrelated systems become ahomogeneous and unified aggregate from both themachine researcher, and operators’ points of view. Thebenefits from this project are a more versatileenvironments for machine research, a more openarchitecture for machine upgrading or modifying capacity,less effort for machine maintenance, and a more advancedmethodology for machine performance enhancement.1  INTRODUCTIONMachine operators or researchers of SRRC used tocontrol the accelerator facilities by two separated,differently designed graphic user interface consoles. Thatled to frequent complains about inconvenience tooperation, unstable booster environment, and difficulty inmeasurement of some booster parameters. Owing to theseincentives, we have spent almost one year to study andaccomplish this project. The booster’s old control systemarchitecture is depicted in Fig. 1 [1], while the modifiedconfiguration is described in Fig. 2. Based on these twofigures, we can summarize important differences that arestated as follows. First, the VAX workstation has beenreplaced by a Unix workstation. Second, the EthernetIEEE 802.2 data link layer protocol is changed to aTCP/IP suite. Third, VMEbus based intelligent localcontrollers replace the old MULTIbus based one. Last,some new interfaces have been installed on VMEbusbased ILCs in order to correct drawbacks of the oldsystem, and enhance capabilities of the modified system.After the replacement and integration is finished, thecontrol system of the booster will become embedded inthe general control system of SRRC that enables furthermachine expansion, accelerator researching, facilityimprovement, beam quality diagnosis, and directcomparisons between performances of the booster andstorage ring. Hence, the old VAX workstation hasbeen eliminated, and replaced by the Unix consoleworkstation where the storage ring’s control systemresides.2.2 VMEbus ControllerThe local controller of the old booster control system isa MULTIbus based single board computer (SBC) runningunder the iRMX II real-time operating system from Intel[1]. Among our storage ring’s system, we have de factoadopted a VMEbus based system for local controllers[2,3]. For the purpose of unifying the overallconfigurations of the control system, we had to replace theold MULTIbus based local controller with VMEbus basedILC. Also, another ILC was installed to communicatewith the Siemens SIMATIC 135/U PLC system. We havechosen the CES 8061, PowerPC-based VMEbus SBCmodule running under the control of Lynx real-timeoperating system.Fig. 2 shows the SIMATIC 135/U PLC system, whichhas been modified and equipped with TCP/IP embeddednetworking packages from Siemens.  That enables thePLC communication protocol to be Ethernet TCP/IP,which is the built-in networking protocol on our existingILCs, instead of the aged and scarcely used IEEE 802.2data link layer protocol. With this capability, the upperlevel Unix workstation can control all functions of thePLC, which is a basic requirement of our integration.2.3 Bitbus NetworkIn the old system configuration, a Bitbus network isused to control front-end devices. Each node isprogrammed to run device control commands requestedfrom the upper level VAX workstation [1]. For the sake ofbudget and manpower limits, Bitbus nodes are stillintegrated into the modified system and are controlled byone of the ILCs such that all front-end devices canfunction as usual and desirably. The VMEbus-compatibleBitbus controller board is installed on one ILC thatconsists of an Intel Bitbus enhanced microcontroller toimplement the Bitbus message structure, protocol, I/Ocommand set, and to provide all of the control functionsfor an extended Bitbus environment. We have kept mostof the Bitbus nodes unchanged but replaced some unstableand obsolete nodes, which are power supply control andslow timing systems, with efficient, economicalalternatives in order to improve the performance of thebooster.3  SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS3.1 Software on WorkstationSince the Unix workstation has replaced the VAX one,the control database of the booster, which resided on theold VAX system, was integrated into the storage ring’smain control database. We have put a lot of effort toexamine and summarize all the signals recorded in thebooster’s control database [1]. Finally, we have picked upthose necessary signal entries and transplanted them intothe SRRC main control database. With these augmentedentries in the main control database, our X window basedfacility control application is able to function completelyand flawlessly [2,3]. The graphic user interface page ofthis application related to the booster is shown in Fig. 3. Itis much more animated and convenient than before. Byrunning that application, first line users should sensedistinct differences between the old and new systems.Figure 3: Updated graphic user interface3.2 Software on Intelligent Local ControllersSince the old MULTIbus based local controller hasbeen replaced by VMEbus based ILCs, all device controlapplications and software developing system had to berewritten and replaced. The overall configurations of thecontrol system in SRRC are described thoroughly withinthe 1994 published articles [2,3]. The main differencebetween then and current ILCs is that the new Lynxoperating system replaces the old pSOS+. Basically,general functions of all software running under the Lynxare pretty much the same as the pSOS+, but theprogramming environment and system services have beenmodified in order to adapt to the new Lynx operatingsystem. Therefore, the integration process includessoftware migrating and rewriting on local controllers.6704  COMPARISONSWe have replaced the troublesome Bitbus power supplycontrol node with our own RS232/RS422 interface.Hence, we are able to augment the regulating process fordipole AC power supplies and to enhance the injectingefficiency of the booster ring. One can see the significantdifference of booster beam currents in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5,which demonstrate that the modified system is much morestable and efficient than the old one.Figure 4: Beam current before integrationFigure 5: Beam current after integrationThe old control system of booster was notorious foroperating inconvenience and too many time-consuming,warming up procedures. We have remedied thesedrawbacks with an automatic booster operation interface.The graphic user interface of automation significantlyoffloads burdens of machine starting up and operations(Fig. 6).5  CONCLUSIONSThe integration project has involved a lot of tediousprerequisites, such as original manual reading, oldsoftware comprehending, control logic realizing andtesting, etc. Those are the reasons why we have hesitatedto take the first movement before. Now that theintegration stage has been carried out, furtherenhancements of the booster are possible. Imminentprojects include 1.5 Gev energy upgrades for the boosterand storage ring, topping up injection mode, and beamquality analysis of the booster. Other advantages obtainedfrom the integration project are a more open systemarchitecture, friendlier operating environment, and lesseffort to troubleshoot the facility. The PLC system andBitbus end nodes, are the constituents with the least or nomodifications. Since the internal implementations of thesecomponents are still not fully comprehended to us, furtherinvestigation and realization are on the way.
