Discipline foundations of strategic as practice: Giddens's structure theory

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Giddens’ın (1984) Yapılaşma Kuramı'nın stratejik yönetim alanında son zamanlarda ileri sürülen Uygulamada Strateji Yaklaşımı’na muhtemel bir disipliner temel oluşturma potansiyelini tartışmaktır. Çalışma, doğası gereği eklektik bir alan olan stratejik yönetimin başta ekonomi olmak üzere psikoloji gibi ana sosyal bilim disiplinlerden yararlanarak kuramsal temellerini güçlendirdiği gözleminden hareket ile stratejik olguların zaman içerisinde nasıl oluştuğunu araştıran süreç çalışmaları alt alanında ortaya atılan Uygulamada Strateji Yaklaşımı’nın sosyoloji disiplini içinde öne sürülen Yapılaşma Kuramı'nın sunduğu kuramsal arka plana yaslanabileceğini ileri sürmektedir. Böylesi bir kuramsal temel sunup sunamayacağını ortaya koyabilmek için şu iki kriter esas alınarak değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır: a) Uygulamada Strateji Yaklaşımı’nın varsayımlarının Yapılaşma Kuram'ından çıkarsanıp çıkarsanamayacağı b) genel kuramın (Yapılaşma Kuramı) ve spesifik yaklaşımın (Uygulamada Strateji) çevreye ilişkin kavramsallaştırmalarında uyumun olup olmadığı. Çalışmada her iki kriter bakımından da destekleyici sonuçlara varılmıştır. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma Uygulamada Strateji Yaklaşımının Giddens’ın (1984) Yapılaşma Kuramı'nın kuramsal temelleri üzerine inşa edilebileceğini önermekte ve bu ilişkinin içsel bağlantılarına işaret ederek stratejik yönetim süreç çalışmaları alt alanına yönelik var olan yazına katkı sunmaktadır.In this paper, the potential of Gidden’s (1984) Structure Theory in terms of its possible disiplinary fondational service to Strategy as Practice Apparoach put forward in the area strategic management in recent years. Taking the observation as a starting point that strategic management, being an eclectic area by its nature, has benefited from first and fore most economic sand other main social science disciplines such as pyscology in order to strengten its theoretical foundation, the study puts forward that Strategy as Practice Approach emerged in the sub-area of strategic management called process studies which attepttoun earth how strategic phenomena formed over time, can be arguably laid down to the theoretical bedrock of the Structure Theory put forward in the discipline of sociology. In order to asses its possible foundational service, the study takes the following two criteria to make an inform edjudgement: a) whether assumptions of Strategy as Practice can be deducible from Structure Theory, b) whetherthe compatibility between environmental explanations of the general theory (Structure Theory) and the specific approach (Strategy as Practice) exist. The study finds out supporting results with regards to thecriteria set. Therefore the study proposes that Strategy as Practice can be built up on the theoretical foundations of Structure Theory, and thus contributes to the literature of process studies sub-area of strategic management by pointing out to the interrelated connections between the theory and the approach
