The objectives of the 'Pilot study on harmonising National Forest Inventories in Europe' were demonstrating and implementing in real cases the harmonization of forest information using National Forest Inventory (NFI) data. The pilot study is thus a first attempt in Europe to provide harmonized NFI information at the supra-national level. Different technical approaches to harmonise selected NFI variables have been tested and evaluated. Four proposed approaches have been tested with real data for selected test sites in three different countries, namely Germany, Spain and Italy. For each of the three countries two test sites were selected, which represent different forest ecosystems but also most typical forests landscapes of the countries. This pilot project constitutes a first operational attempt to harmonize national datasets in order to derive a unique Forest Information database at European level that should allow the compilation and analysis of European forest datasets.JRC.DDG.H.7 - Land management and natural hazard
