Abstract Dynamic Quality-of-Service for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the dynamic network characteristics of mobile ad hoc networks, and explore problems that arise when attempting to provide QoS support in this environment. A dynamic approach to Quality of Service (QoS) is presented as a possible solution to these problems. With this approach, resource reservations represent ranges, and applications adapt to an allocated level of QoS provided by the network at some point within the requested range. To explore this approach, we have implemented a new protocol called dynamic RSVP (dRSVP), which is an extension to RSVP. We describe this protocol and our implementation and testbed, and discuss its applicability to mobile ad hoc networks. We survey related work by other authors, and discuss the unique features of our work. 1
