The history of the Marian Sodalities begins in the 16th century during a period of ideological changes and reforms when a hope for the spiritual renewal of Europe was arising. The inspiration for this movement was the Society of Jesus founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The first Marian sodality was established in 1563 in Rome and quickly spread to other continents. In Poland the sodalities gained popularity upon the arrival of the Jesuits in 1571. The first one was established in Braniewo and subsequently more congregations were formed in various cities. Despite the periodical difficulties, such as the dissolution of the Jesuit order or the repressionsby the Polish People’s Republic, the sodalities endured and experienced a revival, especially during the period of the “Solidarity” movement. Today the Marian sodalities have transformed into Christian life communities and continue their apostolic work. Their history is a sign of commitment to both the Church and the society which serves as a beautiful example of young people educating the youth.Historia Sodalicji Mariańskich rozpoczyna się w XVI wieku, w okresie burzliwych przemian ideowych i reform. Inspiracją dla tego ruchu było Towarzystwo Jezusowe założone przez św. Ignacego Loyolę. Pierwsza Sodalicja Mariańska powstała w 1563 roku w Rzymie i szybko rozprzestrzeniła się na inne kontynenty. Dotarła także do Polski – do Braniewa, gdzie w 1571 roku utworzono pierwszą kongregację, a w kolejnych latach powołano następne w różnych polskich miastach. Mimo okresów trudności, takich jak likwidacja zakonu jezuitów czy represje PRL-u, sodalicje przetrwały i odrodziły się, szczególnie w okresie „Solidarności”. Dzisiaj Sodalicje Mariańskie przekształciły się we Wspólnoty Życia Chrześcijańskiego, kontynuując swą działalność apostolską.
