Public Relations Pubhc1ty and Sports Infonnat10n CONTACT: Dr. Larry Colter, IWU faculty, 309 556-3179 or Ed Alsene Nov. 26, 1980 ea Dr. Hilary Putnam, one of the nation's leading philosophers, will make four public appearances during a visit to the campuses of Illinois Wesleyan and Illinois State universities Wednesday through Saturday (Dec. 3-6). Putnam, a member of the Harvard University faculty since 1965, is an internationally recognized authority in logic, philosophy of science and artificial intelligence. He will present his major public address, "Facts and Values, 11 at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Circus Room of the University Union at Illinois State. This presentation will be of broad general interest. Three other programs also will be open free to interested persons. "College Education: What's Wrong With It? 11 will be his topic at a joint meeting of the philosophy clubs of the two universities at 4 p.m. Thursday in Room 401 of Stevenson Hall at ISU. At 4 p.m. Friday (Dec. 5) in the Executive Lounge of Memorial Student Center at Wesleyan, he will address the philosophy faculties of the two universities on the subject "Truth as Righteousness." A seminar, "Ethical Responsibilities in Science," for the science faculties of the two schools, will be held from 9:30 a.m. until noon Saturday (Dec. 6) in the President's Room of Wesleyan's Memorial Center. Putnam's appearances are made possible by a grant from the Council for Philosophical Studies and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Before joining the faculty at Harvard in 1965 he taught at Northwestern University, Princeton University and Massachussetts Institute of Technology. He has had three volumes of essays published, the latest of which, "Meaning and the Moral Sciences," was published in 1978 by Routledge and Kegan Paul. Page 2. IWU Putnam, who is chairman of Harvard's department of philosophy and is the Walter Beverly Pearson Professor of Modern Mathematics and Mathematical Logic, has become increasingly occupied with relevant moral, social and educational issues. The moral issues which arise in the practice of science, such as the extent to which private corporations and government agencies influence the direction of research. have drawn his particular interest.
