THE CLUSTERING OF GALAXIES IN A HIERARCHICAL UNIVERSE

Abstract

We introduce a new technique for following the formation and evolution of galaxies in cosmological N-body simulations. Dissipationless simulations a reused totracktheformationandmergingofdarkmatterhalosas afunctionofredshift.Simpleprescriptions, takendirectlyfromsemi-analytic modelsofgalaxyformation, areadoptedforgascooling, star formation, supernovafeedbackandthemergingofgalaxies withinthehalos. This scheme enables us to explore the clustering propertiesofgalaxies as a function of redshiftandtoinvestigate how selection by luminosity, colourortypeinu-encestheresults.Twovariantsofacolddarkmatter (CDM)cosmologyare studied:ahigh-densitymodelwith shape-parameter?=0:21(CDM),and alow-densitymodelwith=0:3and=0:7(CDM)
