Urban coexistence and the ethics of otherness

Abstract

The article defends that the principles of hospitality, care and responsibility must support the urban interventions to stimulate the coexistence among different people. The article aims to show that, even in a world dominated with individualistic behavior, the condition of human vulnerability has a potential to act on those principles while unfolding in urban spatial organization. It was necessary to relate the ethics of alterity, as mediator of those principles, with certain spatial arrangements. This revealed to us that urbanism responds  to coexistence when it promotes face to face between differentiated subjects, even challenging its applicability in an adverse political context. Objetiva mostrar que, mesmo em um mundo permeado por comportamentos individualistas, a condição de vulnerabilidade humana tem um potencial de acionar esses princípios com desdobramentos na organização espacial urbana. Foi necessário relacionar a ética da alteridade, enquanto mediadora desses princípios, com certos arranjos espaciais. Desvenda-se que o urbanismo responde à coexistência quando promove o face a face entre sujeitos diferenciados, ainda que seja desafiante sua aplicabilidade em contextos políticos adversos.
