Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan taiteesta puhumisen diskursseja sanomalehti Kalevassa. Aineistona on Kaleva-lehden kuvataidetta ja taidetta yleisesti käsittelevät artikkelit vuoden 2012 heinäkuusta joulukuuhun. Tutkimuksessa halusimme selvittää mitä lähimenneisyyden julkinen puhe taiteesta tuo ilmi taiteeseen liittyvistä erilaisista käsityksistä, asenteista, suhtautumisesta, arvoista ja arvostuksista. Tutkimuskysymyksenä on: Miten taiteesta puhutaan ja millaisia diskursseja julkinen puhe taiteesta sisältää?
Tutkimusmetodeina käytimme Grounded Theory -menetelmää, sekä diskurssianalyyttistä näkökulmaa. Tutkimuksemme on aineistolähtöinen. Teoriaosassa taustoitamme mediaa todellisuuden rakentajana, yhteiskunnan ja taiteesta puhumisen muutoksia, taiteilijakuvaa mediassa, sekä taidekritiikkipuheen taustoja. Analyysiosiossa vertaamme aineistosta tehtyjä havaintoja teoriakirjallisuuteen.
Lehdessä ilmeni neljä erilaista puheentapaa, jotka ovat yhteiskunnallinen puhe taiteesta, taiteilijuuspuhe, taidekritiikkipuhe, sekä taidetta käsittelevä uutispuhe. Puhetavoissa korostuu taide hyvinvoinnin välineenä, myyttisen taiteilijakuvan ylläpitäminen, taidekritiikkipuheen runollisuus, sekä uutispuheen taideinstituutiota toisintava sisältö. Mielipidesivuilla taide ei juurikaan herättänyt keskustelua. Tutkimus tuo tapausesimerkkinä esille, miten taiteesta tällä hetkellä puhutaan pohjois-pohjanmaalaisessa sanomalehdessä.In the pro gradu thesis we examine the discourses of talk of art in the newspaper Kaleva. As material we have used the Kaleva newspapers’ articles which concern visual art and arts in general during the time period from July to December in the year 2012. In the research we wanted to find out what kind of conceptions, attitudes, values and appreciations of art the media handling of art reveals in the near past. Our research question is: How is art discussed in the newspaper Kaleva, and what kinds of discourses do the articles include?
Our research was based on the data-based Grounded Theory method. Alongside that we used discourse analytical approach in the analysing process. In the theory section we delt with background theories, such as media as a constructer of reality, the changes in the discourses of society and discourses of art, the construction of artist-myth, and the theories of art criticism. In the analysis section we compare the notices found from the data with the theory literature.
The newspaper procures four different kinds of discourses of art. They are the society- related discourse of art, the artist-myth discourse, the art criticism discourse, and the art- related news discourse. In the society-related discourse art is emphasised to be a medium for wellbeing. Artist-myth discourse highlights the myths concerning artists. Art criticism discourse is based on the poetic way of talking of art. Art-related news maintain and perpetuate the art institution’s views in their content. Art discussion was absent in the public opinion pages of the paper. The research brings forth as a case- example how art is talked of in the newspaper Kaleva at this time
