Ohio Language & Culture Project Probes Language Use in OhioMarch 5, 2020Categories: NewsTags: Kalynda Thayer, Linguistics news, Michelle O'Malley, Ohio Language and Culture LabFrom left, Kalynda Thayer, Rasmia Shraim, Michelle O’Malley, An Nguyen, Mark Sakach, and Georgia CurranThe Ohio Language & Culture Project, created and directed by Ohio University Linguistics faculty member Dr. MichelleO’Malley, comprises both undergraduate and graduate student members from various disciplines across the universitywith a common interest in sociolinguistic study.The lab supports the continued study and documentation of regional language variation (the Ohio Voices Project), as wellas efforts to connect with the larger community of users through collaborative data-gathering efforts (the Ohio LanguageUse Survey), and information sharing through a podcast series in development.With the hope of connecting the lab’s work to the larger communities of Southeastern Ohio and Ohio in general, the OhioLanguage Use Survey has been relaunched.“If you are an Ohio resident and would like to have your say in how Ohioans from all across the state use English, checkit out!” says O’Malley.Upcoming activities for lab members include several research presentations. During Ohio University’s Spring Break,O’Malley, Kalynda Thayer and Rasmia Shraim will present work on local language awareness campaign as well asempirical work in perceptual dialectology at the 2020 Appalachian Studies Conference in Lexington, KY.  The larger labmembership will also present at a Linguistics Colloquium on Southern Ohio Language Project: Where We Are Today onFriday, March 20.Read more about the Ohio Language & Culture Project.
