Endodontia e o uso da terapia fotodinâmica: revisão de literatura

Abstract

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has emerged as a new therapy, supporting endodontic treatment, with the objective of eliminating persistent microorganisms in mechanical chemical preparation. The purpose of this study was to carry out an integrative literature review on the applications of photodynamic therapy in endodontic treatment. Data collection was performed in the Pubmed (Medline database of the National Library of Medicine) and LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences), using the associated descriptors “endodontics”; “photochemotherapy” and the keyword “Photodynamic therapy”. The inclusion criteria adopted were: original articles, available online in full and free of charge, in English, Portuguese or Spanish, with no time frame and that are within the investigated theme. According to the articles analyzed, the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT) showed effectiveness on persistent microorganisms present in endodontic infections. Several recent studies seek to assess the effectiveness of various substances that combined with PDT can provide a better result. All these alternatives brought positive results. It is suggested to carry out more studies that address cost-effectiveness, thus managing to identify the alternative that has a better result at a more accessible cost.A Terapia Fotodinâmica (Photodynamic Therapy – PDT) tem despontado como uma nova terapia, coadjuvante ao tratamento endodôntico, com o objetivo de eliminar microrganismos persistentes ao preparo químico mecânico. A proposta deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão de literatura integrativa sobre as aplicações da terapia fotodinâmica no tratamento endodôntico. A coleta de dados foi realiza na base de dados Pubmed (Medline da National Library of Medicine) e Lilacs (Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde), utilizando os descritores associados “endodontia”; “fotoquimioterapia” e a palavra-chave “terapia fotodinâmica”. Os critérios de inclusão adotados foram: artigos originais, disponíveis on-line na íntegra e gratuitamente, em inglês, português ou espanhol, sem recorte temporal e que esteja dentro da temática investigada. De acordo com os artigos analisados, o uso da terapia fotodinâmica (PDT) mostrou efetividade sobre micro-organismos persistentes presentes nas infecções endodônticas. Vários estudos  recentes buscam avaliar a eficácia de diversas substancias que combinadas com a PDT podem oferecer um melhor resultado. Todas essas alternativas trouxeram resultados positivos. Sugere-se a realização de mais estudos que abordem o custo-efetividade, conseguindo identificar, assim, a alternativa que possua um melhor resultado com custo mais acessível
