Teaching Resources: Derek Kanwischer, Cherie Peacock, Russ van Paepeghem & Micah Sewell, Andy Lemman Course Purpose: The course is an introduction to sustainability technologies in the built environment coupled with a practicum experience tied to the design and implementation of such technologies in the UM FLAT project. One of the primary assets of the FLAT project is the potential for promoting a culture for sustainability through collaboration and community organizing. Students will take the monitor to the place they are living and collect data about the energy used by 1) at least one major appliance (i.e., refrigerator), 2) at least one small appliance (i.e., computer or television), and 3) at least two small tech appliances (i.e., cell phone charger, mp3 player charger, battery charger). Students will also determine all phantom loads they can find. Because the monitor will only track one use at a time students should schedule 1 typical use day during the week for the major and small appliances and gather data over one 24 hour periods of electricity use. We will provide data sheets for this purpose. Students will enter the data in an excel or other compatible spreadsheet and compute average use for the appliance and the projected total use in a calendar year (365 days X average daily use). Students will then complete the personal action plan questionnaire and turn it in along with a printout and digital copy of their spreadsheet at the beginning of class on the due date for their assigned group. Students will present their findings to the class on October 28 in class. Straw Bale Construction Project: Students will build a straw bale interior wall in the UM FLAT garage as part of their work for the course. Construction will begin during the class period on October 7, but will require participation outside of class. Students will sign up for times that they can help complete construction outside of class time. Participation in the construction will be graded according to effort (working diligently according to ability when present), involvement (number of sessions attended) and skill based on where the student starts in terms of knowledge and construction experience (in other words if one student has carpentry experience more proficiency will be expected than for those students with no prior building experience). Photovoltaic worksheet: Students will be given a worksheet at the start of the September 16 class on photovoltaics. Students will work in groups to complete various tasks in a lab-like setting using a multi-meter with photovoltaic electricity generators of various types and sizes. Students will enter data into the worksheet and turn it in for grading at the end of the period. A calculator or laptop will be useful within each group. Gallagher Business Building review: The class will spend a class period examining the classroom building for sustainability. Students will note and discuss features that promote more sustainable approaches to meeting building needs/roles and those that do not promote sustainability. Students will write a summary of the sustainability positives and negatives of the building and propose a first step for moving toward a more sustainable building life that will be turned in on November 18. Student UM FLAT project proposals: Each student will develop a UM FLAT sustainable technology application proposal for retrofitting the UM FLAT building(s), grounds or operations as their final project. Over the course of the semester, students will develop individual proposals for new technology or living approaches that could be adopted in the UM FLAT project. Students are encouraged to begin discussing ideas with instructional staff and outside resource people soon after the course begins. Students must develop a project idea for presentation to the class on Wednesday November 18. At that time the student will turn in a written summary of the project idea. The final project report will develop the idea into a full project proposal in approximately 8 pages, detailing the necessary behavior modifications, materials, work and expected outcome(s)/benefit(s) of the implementation of the proposal. Students shall include a budget for implementation of the project and any necessary explanatory materials. Samples of project proposals will be provided for student review by mid-term. Students will present their project ideas to the class on either on the final regular class period, December 9, or the final exam date, December 14 (1:10-3:10 in the classroom). One of the class proposals will be selected for implementation at the UM FLAT. Attendance: Attendance will inescapably be part of your grade as many of the assignments grow out of class period work that cannot be made up outside of class. Make-ups may not be possible and only those arranged ahead of the class period will be permitted. This requires that you contact the lead instructor, Len Broberg by e-mail or phone prior to class if you are sick or cannot otherwise attend. Failure to complete an assignment will result in a zero assigned for that assignment grade. Learning Objectives 1. Understand basic principles of sustainability in the context of the built environment. 2. Understand and complete two types of monitoring of energy use and apply the information to an action plan. 3. Understand and perform basic skills of strawbale construction. 4. Understand basic principles of photovoltaics and be able to incorporate those principles into an application in the built environment. 5. Gain skills in researching and presenting sustainability applications. 6. Develop written and oral communication skills. 7. Know how to operate and use a multi-meter.
