We aim to graduate practitioners who are competent to address the unique challenges resulting from the intersection of rural and global public health issues through approaches that examine the interaction of biological, environmental, historical, political, socio-cultural, economic and behavioral factors and their relationship to public health policy, management and intervention.  COURSE DESCRIPTION The International Health course is a 3 credit hour elective graduate level course.  It is designed to introduce students to the principles of International Health; and to assist students in obtaining an understanding of the practice of International Health.  This course will examine: the Definition of International Health, History and Progress of Disease, and the Role of the Public Health in promoting health and preventing disease in the international arena.    Goals of this course: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Define and discuss the history and current importance of International Health 2. Understand the history and varying patterns of global infectious diseases 3. Discuss the influence on modern societies and cultures of the circulation of infectious disease 4. Discuss the political, demographic and psychological effects of disease on humans 5. Discuss the role of public health professionals, non-governmental organizations, and other international organizations in humanitarian crises  Public Health Competencies to be covered in this course: 1. Describe the roles of history, power, privilege and structural inequality in producing health disparities 2. Explain how professional ethics and practices relate to equity and accountability in diverse community settings 3. Explain why cultural competency alone cannot address health disparity 4. Discuss the importance and characteristics of a sustainable diverse public health workforce 5. Use the basic concepts and skills involved in culturally appropriate community engagement and empowerment with diverse communities 6. Apply the principles of community-based participatory research to improve health in diverse populations 7. Differentiate among availability, acceptability, and accessibility of health care across diverse populations 8. Differentiate between linguistic competence, cultural competency, and health literacy in public health practice 9. Cite examples of situations where consideration of culture-specific needs resulted in a more effective modification or adaptation of a health intervention 10. Develop public health programs and strategies responsive to the diverse cultural values and traditions of the communities being served 11. Describe how social, behavioral, environmental and biological factors contribute to specific individual and community health outcomes 12. Explain how the contexts of gender, race, poverty, history, migration, and culture are important in the design of of interventions within public health systems  3 13. Analyze the effects of political, social and economic policies in public health systems at the local, state, national and international levels. 14. Readings and assignments designed to develop applied skills will form the basis for review and discussion during the weekly class postings on the discussion board.  A self-study format (e.g., reading assignments, PowerPoint presentations, and web links) will be used to present key points, however, the emphasis will be on discussion and application of the course material in discussion threads.  UMOnline Blackboard Tutorial UMOnline has made available an interactive tutorial for using Blackboard as a student. The tutorial and other resources can be found at the following web site: http://umonline.umt.edu/StudentInfo/  Library Resources Some assignments may require library resources.  To access the UM’s Mansfield Library resources from off-campus, students will be required to enter their SCAUID and password.   This is the same ID and password that you use to login to Blackboard and use for your official UM e-mail address. The toll-free number for the reference desk is 1-800-240-4939.   5 CLASS PARTICIPATION: Completion of reading assignments and active online participation is expected.  Readings and assignments designed to develop applied skills will form the basis for review and discussion.  An electronic discussion format will be used to review key points and to provide additional information.  The emphasis will be on discussion of open-ended questions and analysis of the course material and assignments.  This format necessitates timely completion of readings and assignments, as well as class participation.      Each week students will receive two questions from the instructors.  These questions will be posted on the Web by 10 a.m. each Thursday.  Each student must answer posted questions on the web by midnight on Wednesday of the following week. Responses posted after Wednesday will not be graded.  The first week of class begins on Tuesday, January 22, 2208. Final examinations are May 5 -9, 2008.   This course is divided into three sections.  At the end of each section a question(s) will be posted on the web covering a topic(s) discussed in the preceding section.  Students must submit a one page written paper in response to the question(s).     COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Class Participation: 50% (This grade is generated by answering the web discussion questions each week. Answers are scored good (2), average (1), or (0) poor. Exceptional answers can be awarded extra-credit at the discretion of the instructors. 2. Section Assignments: 30% (There are three of these, one for each of the three main sections of the course. These are each to be one page long, double-spaced. The instructors will provide the question (s) to be answered for each section assignment. The answers are to be integrative, covering the material of the section involved). 3. Course Final: 20% (This will be open-book and take home, but it will be a timed exam and cumulative for the course).
