Willie Clancy Course Overview: Our goal in this session is to expose you to a basic knowledge and historical perspective of Irish traditional music. Students will learn about the instruments used in Irish music, the categories of dance tunes, the structure of the music and the basics of ornamentation and variation. Students will gain an insight into how the tradition and the repertoire has been preserved over the years both in Ireland and in America, by collectors such as Captain Francis O’Neill and Canon James Goodman. We will look at the ensembles which perform Irish music today, and also two of the most iconic performers of Irish music: O’Carolan and Willie Clancy. Course Outcomes: This course aims to impart students with a foundational knowledge of Irish traditional music, its’ origins, instrumentation, features and regional styles. It will enable students to identify tune types aurally and discuss and analyse performances/recordings of Irish traditional music. Assessment: Online activity: 15% Listening exercises: 45% Written exercises: 40%   Each of the categories above are broken into 2 units, with quizzes at the end of each one. Units 1& 2:  Instrumentation in Irish traditional music   The various instruments used for melody, harmony and rhythm in ITM: fiddle, flute, accordion, concertina, harp, uilleann pipes, bodhrán, guitar, piano, bouzouki  The basics of ornamentation in Irish music: cuts, rolls, triplets Units 3 & 4: Irish traditional dance tunes  The structure of traditional dance tunes  Recognising the different categories of dance tunes: jigs, reels, hornpipes, slip jigs, polkas and slides  Other tune types: Planxties, marches, strathspeys and slow airs Units 5 & 6: Regional styles of Irish traditional music  Regional styles and their characteristics: Sliabh Luachra, East Clare, Sligo and Donegal  The instruments and tune types associated with each region  Recognising the different styles & exponents of each region Units 7 & 8: Collectors and sources of Irish traditional music  Iconic collectors of Irish traditional music: Edward Bunting, Canon James Goodman, Captain Francis O’Neill  Modern day composers of Irish traditional music Units 9 & 10: Ensembles in Irish traditional music   Arrangements of Irish traditional music: ceilí bands and their instrumentation   Seán Ó Riada’s Ceoltóirí Chualann and new arrangements of Irish music  Modern bands: The Bothy Band, The Gloaming, Téada  Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and its role in reviving ensemble playing Unit 11: Turlough O’Carolan  The harping tradition in Ireland  Wire strung harps vs modern harps  O’Carolan’s compositions: planxties Unit 12: Willie Clancy  Willie Clancy and his influences in county Clare  Styles of uilleann piping: open and closed    Assessments:  Weekly online quizzes   Concert analysis  Final essay: case study Reading Materials: Cawley, Jessica. 2020.
