Differently of some regions of Spanish America and the Capital of the Portuguese State in
India, Brazil did not come to have established a Tribunal of Holy Office. Nevertheless, and
for besides the visitations and inquiries ordered, in the Colony the Lisbon Inquisition had its
performance marked through officials who in its name operated. They were, in the great
majority of the times, responsible for inquiries, hearing confessions and accusations, initiating
inquiries, arresting and sending the guilty to Lisbon just in case. So to speak, they were the
uncontested representatives of Inquisitors. In Bahia, as in the remainder of terras brasílicas,
an effective acting of the Inquisition only was viable due to the formation and performance of
this network where the officials were properly qualified for such functions. The reclaim,
systematization and analysis of the documentation concerning those men and their actions
have special importance while they are going to enable a plunging study and renewal of
discussion regarding the composition and functioning of Tribunal in Portuguese America.
Thus we sought out presenting in this thesis an analysis of the relation between Portuguese
Inquisition and Bahian society through the Commissioners, Qualifiers and Notaries in the
period between 1962 and 1804.Diferentemente de algumas regiões da América Espanhola e da Capital do Estado Português
na Índia, o Brasil não chegou a ter um Tribunal do Santo Ofício estabelecido. Não obstante e
para além das visitações e inquirições ordenadas, a Inquisição de Lisboa teve na Colônia sua
atuação marcada por meio de oficiais que em seu nome operavam. Foram eles, na grande
maioria das vezes, os responsáveis pelas inquirições, por ouvir confissões e delações, iniciar
inquéritos, prender e enviar os réus para Lisboa caso necessário. Eram, por assim dizer, os
representantes incontestes dos Inquisidores. Na Bahia, como no restante das terras brasílicas,
uma atuação efetiva da Inquisição só foi viável devido à formação e atuação dessa rede, sendo
os oficiais devidamente habilitados para tais funções. O resgate, a sistematização e a análise
da documentação relativa a esses homens e suas ações revestem-se de especial importância na
medida em que permitirão um aprofundamento e renovação do debate relativo à estrutura e ao
funcionamento do Tribunal do Santo Ofício na América Portuguesa. Assim, buscamos
apresentar, nesta tese, uma análise da relação entre a Inquisição Portuguesa e a sociedade
baiana por meio dos Comissários, Qualificadores e Notários no período entre 1692 e 1804
