Objective 1: Students will employ pre-research as a strategy to explore and refine ideas and develop researchable topics. Activity includes assessment.  Step 1:  If they haven’t already, students jot down three VERY GENERAL topics, questions, ideas. These are not detailed or focused. They could be as basic as water pollution or social media. If possible, suggest to WRT instructor that students should come to class prepared with these. Again, they can be super general.  Research topic ideas (general)  1. 2. 3.  Step 2: Students ask themselves one question about the topic and write it down.  Question I have about my potential topic  _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________  Step 3: Students pass their paper to someone else and have that person write down a question about that topic.  Someone else’s question about my topic  _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________  Step 4: (Assesses student’s use of pre-research to narrow and define a topic from a general idea)  Students do a VERY GENERAL Summon search using a word or words from either one of the questions or, if those don’t inspire, the VERY GENERAL topic itself and use the search results to find another question or more focused information to begin narrowing/defining.
