Lithium has become a key element of technologies in the second decade of the 21st century. Its applications and use have grown exponentially. Similarly, research related to the element in both geological, metallogenic, chemical and industrial aspects. Globally, lithium was first identified in Sweden in 1817 by Johan August Arfvedson. Argentine chemist and geologist Luciano R. Catalano drew attention to its presence in the Puna salars in the 1920s. Intensive studies begin in the decade of 1970 and 1980 where they participate the National University of Salta (UNSa), the National Commission of Space Investigations (CNIE) and the General Direction of Military Fabrications (DGFM). After an unsuccessful attempt at exploitation in the salar del Rincón, they bear fruit with the first project underway at the salar del Hombre Muerto (Fénix Project, FMC) in the early 1990s. In this work a brief synthesis of the history of the geological and chemical investigations around lithium and the men who carried it out is made.
El litio se ha convertido en un elemento clave de las tecnologías en la segunda década del siglo XXI. Sus aplicaciones y su uso han crecido exponencialmente. En igual sentido las investigaciones relacionadas con el elemento tanto en los aspectos geológicos, metalogénicos, químicos e industriales. En el ámbito mundial el litio fue identificado por primera vez en Suecia por Johan August Arfvedson en 1817. El químico y geólogo argentino Luciano R. Catalano llamó la atención sobre su presencia en los salares puneños en la década de 1920. Los estudios intensivos comienzan en la década de 1970 y 1980 donde participan la Universidad Nacional de Salta, la Comisión Nacional de Investigaciones Espaciales y la Dirección General de Fabricaciones Militares. Luego de un intento fallido de explotación en el salar del Rincón, dan su fruto con el primer proyecto en marcha en el salar del Hombre Muerto a comienzo de los noventa. En este trabajo se realiza una breve síntesis de la historia de las investigaciones geológicas y químicas en torno al litio y de los hombres que la llevaron a cabo
