Commission to Study the Common Body of Knowledge for CPAs Follow this and additional works at: https://egrove.olemiss.edu/aicpa_assoc  Part of the Accounting Commons REPORT OF THE COMMISSION TO STUDY THE COMMON BODY OF KNOWLEDGE FOR CPAsTo the Council of the American Institute of Certified Public AccountantsThe commission was appointed by the Executive Committee of the Institute to provide advice and consultation to the Director of the Study of the Common Body of Knowledge for CPAs. The commission has met with Dean Robert H. Roy, the study director, three times since our last report to you; at the last two meetings there have been drafts of parts of the study director’s manuscript for the commission’s consideration.About 950 responses were received from the 3,400 questionnaires that were distributed to Institute member-firms. The staff has summarized these data and has written a chapter describing the major findings.About 1,900 sets of subject matter evaluation cards have been returned out of the approximately 2,600 sets that were distributed to practitioners, educators, and industrialists, and others. Data resulting from these cards have been accumulated and analyzed in the first draft of a chapter of the director’s study report.The staff is now in the process of reviewing accounting curriculums with intent of discovering what is now being taught to accounting majors and what changes have occurred in recent years.The findings of interviews with prominent accountants and correspondence with a number of promising young CPAs will probably not be formally summarized in the study but have no doubt influenced the attitudes and analyses of the study director.The First DraftFirst drafts of nine out of some eighteen projected chapters for the study have been reviewed by the commission and suggestions for future drafts have been made. The materials developed to date have largely been descriptive of the study, the profession, the function of the formal organization in a modern society, and of the data from the questionnaire and subject matter evaluation card research devices.The ScheduleThe assignment to delineate the common body of knowledge for CPAs is proving to be a difficult one and is requiring more time and money than was originally expected. The staff and the commission now expect that a complete first draft will be available by September 1, 1965. The next meeting of the commission will be held in August, by which time the commission expects to be able to review most of the first draft. Additional meetings have been scheduled at approximately six-week intervals, and both commission and staff expect to devote substantial amounts of time to this study until it is completed.The commission has asked Edward S. Lynn to remain as its secretary even though he is leaving the Institute to return to teaching.(over)- 2 -Annual Meeting, The American Association of Collegiate Schools of BusinessThe 1965 meeting of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business was held April 28-30; 1965. The subject of the meeting was the required subject matter in the several fields of knowledge covered in the typical curriculums of schools of business. Dean Roy spoke to the group using the data that have been developed from the several research devices, particularly the subject matter evaluation cards. He did not give, in any sense, a preliminary description of the common body of knowledge.Annual Meeting, American Institute of CPAsDean Roy and members of the commission will participate in one of the sessions at the annual meeting.
