Transcription of Children and Youth co-design section - cleaned and anonymizedFacilitator 1: Um, and I'm, I'm happy to share that I'm actually not from a city, so I'm curious to hear from you all about what the lived experience has been like and where you're from. Um, but yeah. Actually, please, if you would share where you're from, I'd be really curious to know. Audience 1:Yeah, so,  uh, my name is NAME, I grew up in a city called Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria. Um, uh, my experience, you know, just to touch a little bit of my experience. Is it what you want? 00:01Facilitator 2: Yeah, we wanna, what we, the next, the next question we want to ask is how is climate change affecting the lives of children and young people in that city? So your city where you grew up. 00:02Audience 1: Yeah, so I think it's, it's characterized by so many, uh, challenges, uh, such as noise pollution. Uh, we also have issues of, um, um, You know, CO2, the quality of air not being good. And the noise pollution comes majorly from car. You know, because we have cars that are not, that are not road worthy. We also have, um, issues of children being killed on their way to schools. You know, so car crash is high, you know. Um, so these are, these are predominantly, uh, issues we face. Within the community in which I grew up. 00:03Facilitator 1: Thank you for sharing. 00:04Audience M: Hi, um, my name's NAME and I'm from a small, I don't even think it's considered a city, but it's a capital of a country. So I'm from Funafuti, uh, that is in Tuvalu. It's the fourth smallest country in the world, and we have the. Smallest international airport. So in terms of the impacts of climate change on youth and and children, I feel that if most of you have been following the research and data, you'd know that uh Tuvalu as a state uh is said to be the first country that disappears because of climate change and we've been given uh, until about 2100. Um, for that. So yeah, so in terms of how youth and children will be in in Funafuti, it looks very gloomy and dim unless we have adaptation, reclamation, or if our government and international organizations like the current multilateral discussions, uh, decide on a mechanism for us to migrate. And, uh, in that When I say migrate, I mean migrate with dignity, where we are able to migrate to a place where sovereignty still maintains, and we can still vote, and we can still continue to be Tuvaluans. So, yeah. Yeah, thank you. 00:05Facilitator 2: Can you make sure, if possible, if you capture these on the Slido, because what we're doing is we're trying to generate these, um, images for each event, so it's really good, it's a really powerful example. Thank you. 00:06Audience 2: Um, so thank you for asking that wonderful question. When I saw the first question, I'm like, oh, I didn't grow in a city, but there is a city attached to the name of the place I grew in, and the place is called Zaire City. I don't know why they call it Zaire City. So, um, going to the next question, what are the impact of climate change being felt by children within the community I grew up in? I know one for a fact. Children are being displaced because of the flooding that happens almost frequently in that place. And the aftermath of flooding is health crisis. You see children battling with a lot of diseases which leads to premature death. And another thing is regarding the, uh, air pollution. There are two type of Um, there is a lot of things that affect children largely in that there is air quality that come from the surrounding, and there is also indoor emission due to their parent having to cook with, uh, inefficient means of cooking. They don't have any better way they could cook, and most times when they go to cook, they back these children, uh, or play with them around that, and before you know, that there is early onset of asthma in children, and some of them die early. There is huge death of young people before the age of. Children before the age of five. I can't remember the statistics and also for women. That's also something that is really Affecting them. I'll just touch on this because of the time 00:07Facilitator 1: Thank you for sharing. I think something that's really interesting about what you've just noted is health is the first indicator that something is going wrong with our climate. We feel it. We the air becomes hard to breathe. The temperatures rise and we feel it. And so I think you've really demonstrated and explained how women and Children are experiencing climate change first through an impact to their health. So thank you very much. Please. 00:08Audience A: Hi. I am NAME from Mongolia. Um, yeah. Our families fundamental rights to access clean drinking water and to reside in a healthy and safe environment are currently under threat. Their prevalence of litter in the streets poses a significant challenge to maintaining hygiene standards. Furthermore, the alarming levels of air pollution resulting from excessive fuel consumption, uh, have become a direct contributor to respiratory diseases. Compounding these issues is the skeleton soil pollution geopolicy, uh, the availability, uh, of even our drinking water. Addressing this soil pollution, addressing this environment concerns is imperative to safeguard the well being rights of our family, emphasizing their urgent need for comprehensive and sustainable solutions. very much. 00:09Facilitator 2: I just wanted to show you briefly, we haven't been able to get the live integration working with Slido, but There's a really, really rich set of points people have made into the online survey, and I want to reassure you They're not just going here that we're going to use those to then generate Visualizations for the next workshop, but we've got one more question before I show you some from some we did earlier 00:10Facilitator 3: So the last question if you lived in a healthy sustainable city where children and youth thrive, what would you look? What would what would it look like and describe it in details, please? 00:11Facilitator 1: And I think our friend from Mongolia just set us up very well for this question by saying Children and young people and adults alike. We all deserve to have a healthy and clean and safe environment And so really you can even close your eyes in this moment and try to envision what that looks like for each one of you Think about the city that you grew up in or if you weren't from a city like myself and some of our friends in the Room you can imagine if you were to move to a city, what would that look like? And how would it be healthy and sustainable for young people? 00:12Facilitator 2: And we'll explain why we're asking you to just describe that city, almost close your eyes and picture it. What does it look like, the Healthy and Sustainable City, because we'll show you some of that in a second. 00:13Audience 2:  Okay, uh, what I would say, uh, uh, given where I am from, I am from, uh, a city where you would see a lot of young people who are interested in starting business. And one of the easiest way of starting is to kind of have a very small, uh, setting in front of, uh, the high road, uh, by the roadside, you understand? So mostly that is what they do and that is where they start from. But over time, those places they stay, when it flood, you'd find out that when they wake up in the morning, they would find out that all those places, all their properties are washed away, and that really cost them a lot 00:14Facilitator 2: so I hesitate to stop you, but I only want to stop you because we're trying to, we've talked about the harms, and that's a really powerful example, the flooding of that, that home. But what does the good side look like? What is the, what is the, the destination where we should be heading? Describe that for us. 00:15Audience 2: Okay, very good. So, I think for the way we should be heading to is to ensure that, uh, very sustainable infrastructure, you understand, that is inclusive for young people because, as I said earlier, of where they build their shops and it will wash away. If you could have a sustainable infrastructure and very accessible for young people, they can be able to also, uh, Uh, and they are already making the change. And reaching out to the government and social development partners to ensure that, okay, we are trying to make a livelihood for ourselves and be relevant in our communities. But there is a big threat to our businesses. So if we can have more sustainable and affordable, uh, building that we can do our business, it will go a long way. 00:16Facilitator 2: Thank you. Does anybody else want to share a kind of positive vision for what is a healthy, sustainable city look like? You can either type it in or you can, you can describe, visualize it for us. Paint a picture. Yeah. 00:17Audience 1: So I think, um, I think for me it is a city that's that, um, that is devoid of crashes, especially for Children who, who go to school, who want to play outside, you know. It's also a city that is, that is devoid of air pollution and, um, of course, noise pollution. Uh, that way issues of, um, cancer, um, diseases relate,  relating to, uh, air, uh, sort of reduced and, um, avoided, uh, within communities and, and livelihood, especially as, uh, for, for children and, and young people. And again, because road traffic crashes is a leading killer of young people and most of these deaths occur within the city, you know, on the way, on the way, on the way where children go to school or play, you know, so this is where most of these crashes happen. And so if we have a city that is devoid of that, I think it's, it's something that is, that is, that is good. 00:18Facilitator 1: for sharing. I think what our friends have just shared with us is really interesting because we've heard from two very different angles how to improve lives for young people. We've heard about this need for infrastructure that's resilient and developed in order to just give young people a place to live that is healthy. And then we've just heard from our friend, there's larger systemic issues that need to change related to the environment, but also just related to, you know, support for young people, access to different things and the ability to live a youthful life. And I think that we have another contribution. Yeah, I would love to hear how there are other ways we can describe the healthy city for us. 00:19Audience 2: All right. Thank you. My name NAME. Um, for me, envisioning a sustainable or healthy city is one where people have access to a balanced meal. You know, and then it shouldn't be expensive when I think about it, I feel like every community should have like a farm that can fend for its people within the community. And then even if you have to source for any other ingredients, you should be able to go to the nearest community to get it. You don't have to travel far and outside of your community to have access to the basic needs of life. So, that's how I envision a sustainable community or a healthy community to be. One that people have ease of access to healthy food, and that is devoid of any other issues like fertilizer, giving you issues, health issues, and all of that. Thank you. 00:20Audience B: Okay, the only thing I want to add is that for a sustainable city, you should have a user friendly pedestrian walk which can promote cycling and walking among the youth. 00:21Facilitator 1: Thank you.  I second that one. I'm with you. More bikes. 00:22Facilitator 2: More bikes in the world. 00:23Facilitator 4: Okay. Any other? And please don't forget to add your responses to the Slido. 00:24Facilitator 4: Please let's interact on Slido because like Facilitator 2 said, the images that we are going to generate, we are also going to share it at the Resilience Hub, um, on the 5th. So please do ensure that you scan the QR code and you add your responses so your lived experience about climate change in your city and how you envision a sustainable city to look like. 00:25Facilitator 2: should we, yeah, should I just tell, should I just talk a second? 00:26Facilitator 4: So, yeah, so these are images that we generated from the Greening Education Hub two days ago and where we had mothers and young people there to talk about. How lived experiences of children living in cities now, and also from their imagination, how a sustainable city where children can grow and thrive will look like. So Facilitator 2 is just going to take us through those two images, and then we look at how we can move from, you know, the lived experience of pollution now to a better city. 00:27Facilitator 2: Thanks very much. And, you know, as we said at the beginning, what we're hoping is that these series of events will connect together, and we will collate together the insights that come out. So these are some images we generated, uh, using, uh, generative AI based on the responses in the Slido from, uh, the education, the greening education hub. And I just wanted to sort of echo some of the insights that we've come with today. What we'll do is we'll use your insights you shared with us to generate a new set for the workshop we're doing tomorrow. Um, and really what, what I think we're seeing is we see a very, quite a dystopian view. It's actually quite easy to get a little bit depressed. about the negative harms. We've heard some really powerful examples of being displaced from your home by rising sea levels or floods interrupting your walk to school and your home or air pollution affecting your respiratory health. So it is important to acknowledge these, but we also wanted to make sure we create the space to think about the positive opportunities, which maybe I don't know. Do you want to talk about what we generated from the positive as well? 00:29Facilitator 1: Yeah, it was really interesting. You can see it. Yeah. From these, uh, different examples that we've generated a lot of. Very urban, very, very bright, uh, fun infrastructure, I would say. And I think this is a reflection of the fact that we were in the Greening Education Hub speaking to urban designers who had, um, a specific focus on design for young people. And so we did this in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Early Child Authority. And so it definitely had a very youthful influence. But I think the thing that you can transfer to sort of any ideal urban future is. The optimism and how you can design with young people in mind in order to build healthy and sustainable cities And so a few of my favorite features of these were Honestly the lack of cars for me That was a big selling point as well as the greenery as we've already heard from people In other consultations as well Heat is rising And it's not comfortable to be in these cities.So I think thinking in terms of what a young person experiences and how to make that better, it translates when we envision it into these greener and more beautiful environments.  00:30Facilitator 4: Thanks, Facilitator 1.Because of time, we have to wrap up today's session, but, um, quickly, um, we just want two people to tell us what, um, they'll be doing after this session to ensure that we achieve or we build a sustainable city where young people and children will be able to thrive. And then also, like they mentioned, the images and data we generate from these co design workshops, they are going to be going to further research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where we are going to come up with findings that we can use for advocacy and also to influence policies. 00:31Facilitator 4: So if you want to know more about the results from the various co design workshops we are going to have throughout this core period, just scan the QR code, you'll be able to have access to the LH, there's Climate City Children and Climate Action Hub at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, um, but before we go, just two reactions from people, what, what's What is that one thing you're going to do when you leave this co design workshop to ensure that we achieve or we build a more sustainable city for children and young people? 00:32Audience 3: Okay, for me, I know that the, here in Ghana, assemblies come up with their medium term development plan. So, as a change agent, when I go back to Ghana, I'll try to engage my local assembly  to ensure that if they are developing their medium term development plan. They, they incorporate structures, so user friendly structures, I don't know, to be able to create a sustainable environment. So that is what I think I'll be doing when I get back to my home country. 00:33Facilitator 4: So that's the perspective from Africa. Can we get from another continent? Last one, anybody, anyone who wants to share? Looks like you want to share, sister. So what, what are you going to do from this co design workshop to ensure we build a sustainable city? 00:34Audience M: I think for us, the takeaway would be that we build our capacity, uh, with the hope that if we are to migrate as a last resort, we would migrate with dignity, uh, regardless of where we resettle. It's important that we ensure we have, um, the best livelihoods that we can offer, not only us, but the youths and also our children.00:35
