Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, São Paulo) (Vergamini et al. 2011; Santos et al. 2013; Weiss et al., 2015; Calixto-Cunha et al. 2021).

Previous records in Minas Gerais. The first record of the species in Minas Gerais by Calixto-Cunha et al. (2021) indicates that M. pantanalense has expanded its distribution outside the Pantanal region.

Remarks. The genetic distance and the haplotype diversity between M. pantanalense population from Pantanal and M. amazonicum population from the Amazon Delta obtained by Weiss et al. (2015) reinforce the hypothesis of these being distinct species. The reproductive isolation observed by Nogueira et al. (2020) appears to be another piece of evidence to support this hypothesis.
Published as part of Jacobucci, Giuliano Buzá, Bueno, Alessandra A.
