Bronchodilator administration by metered-dose inhaler during invasive mechanical ventilation: a scoping review

Abstract

Inhaled medications are frequently administered to patients under mechanical ventilation. Several drugs can be administered through different inhalation methods. It is not entirely clear how best to connect MDIs to mechanical ventilation circuits and what the inhalation technique should be like. The objective of this scope review is to identify the main characteristics regarding the administration of bronchodilator drugs contained in MDI to mechanically ventilated patients and the ways of connecting the drug to the ventilation circuit
