It includesindustries, like Corus, universities, Eindhoven andDelft and research centers, like TNO-TPD and TNO-industry.ObjectivesThere is a growing interest in wear resistant layerson Al for use under light sliding loads. The wear re-sistant layers we want to achieve are either DiamondLike Carbon (DLC) or metal-carbonitrides. In this re-cently started project we have as objectives to formu-late criteria for such layers to be successful and toobtain these criteria using any of a number of deposi-tion techniques. These techniques include:✷ Unbalanced magnetron sputtering PVD, inhouse.✷ PECVD, TNO.✷ expanding arc plasma PVD, Applied physicsdept.Initial approachThe initial approach is purely experimental, aimed atquick assessment of the main problems that occur.Two main problems have to be tackled:✷ Unfavourable mechanical properties of Al (lowhardness). This is of course related to the needfor a coating. Question is, how thick and harddoes a coating have to be to sustain concen-trated mesoscopic loads in typical contact situ-ations.✷ Unfavourable thermal properties of Al (low melt-ing point(Tm), high coefficient of thermal expan-sion). This is a problem related to the depositionof the layers that usually takes place at elevatedtemperatures, say 0.6 Tm.Results and DiscussionFilms deposited by Plasma enhanced means show ahigh stress level. As a result the adhesion is quitepoor. In order to decrease this stress level, inter-layers with a gradient in composition are first appliedto the substrate.fig. 1 Left:AlTiTiN sharp interface - Right: AlTiTiN gradientinterfaceDLC-Ti coatings deposited on Al with interlayers,show column-like growth on top of a rippled sub-strate.
