Academia.edu is an academic social network founded in 2008 by philosopher Richard Price, with the aim of sharing documents with the scientific community, mainly researchers in the field of Social Sciences, favouring direct communication between authors and readers and between research staff.   Academia.edu is a freemium tool, that is, it offers a number of free basic services, but to use the more advanced features it requires a paid premium account. Paid features are easy to identify because they are accompanied by a closed padlock icon.     Among the free features of Academia.edu are  Create and manage a researcher profile.  Deposit your own work and share it to gain visibility.  Search for academic publications (by keywords in the title).  Download documents, share them, save them in your personal library or export them to your Google Drive account.  Search for researchers and track their scientific activity.  Find colleagues from our Google and Facebook contacts.  Follow up on our topics of interest.  Search for and post job vacancies.  Start a discussion and participate in discussions created by others. Paid functionalities include:  Advanced search for publications, allowing you to locate search terms within the full text of documents.  Create search alerts.  Apply filters (by publication date, document type and language) to the list of results.  Sort the results from the most recent to the oldest (in the free version you can only see them sorted by relevance).  Access to short summaries of publications.  Batch download of closely related publications.  Automatic translation of documents into 24 different languages.  Creation of a personal web page to publicise our academic work.  Know which other researchers have cited our work.  Search for funding for our research projects.  Obtain advanced statistics on our academic production.  Eliminate the display of advertising.    In the following sections we will see which of the free features of Academia.edu help us to keep up to date on scientific information.  CID DIGITAL INFORMATION COMPETENCES Academia.edu UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE 4   Search engine   Academia.edu incorporates a search engine, present in the top menu of each page, which allows you to locate publications (papers), researchers (people), interests (research interests), universities (universities), videos (videos) and courses (courses).    Search for publications   Academia.edu contains more than 47 million full-text documents. To search for publications, simply type a series of keywords in the search box and click on View all results to access the full list of results.  CID DIGITAL INFORMATION COMPETENCES Academia.edu UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE 5   The results page is divided into 5 tabs:  Paper titles: These are the results that present the search terms in the title of the documents.  Papers (Full text): These are the results that present the search terms in the full text of the documents. Logically, the number of results is much higher, but only premium users can access these results.  People: These are researchers related to the search terms.  Videos: Documents in video format.  Courses: Courses related to the search topic.   Within the Paper titles tab we have, on the left-hand side, a series of filters exclusive to premium users. On the right-hand side, we have the results sorted by relevance. A series of buttons allow you to download the document (Download) or save it to your personal library. The option Download Full PDF Package - which allows you to download a package consisting of the document, its abstract and other related documents - is restricted to premium users.    By clicking on the title of the document you can access the complete bibliographic record, which allows you to view the document (original PDF), access other related documents (Related), as well as see a summary of the researcher's file (on the right-hand side) and some exclusive options for premium users (Download PDF Package, Translate PDF, Abstract). Under the authorship, there is information on the number of pages and the number of views of the document.  CID DIGITAL INFORMATION COMPETENCES Academia.edu UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE 7   By clicking on the three dots symbol that appears to the right of the Translate PDF option, a drop-down menu opens with options : share the publication, save it to a Google Drive account and save it to your personal library. In this menu, you also have the option to report the document, in case of its contents is not appropriate or that it has been uploaded to the platform by a user other than the author in violation of intellectual property legislation.     Information on other publications by the same authors and related publications can be found on the far right of the document.   CID DIGITAL INFORMATION COMPETENCES Academia.edu UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE 8   Search for researchers   There are currently more than 243 million registered users on Academia.edu. To locate a specific researcher, you can use the search engine in the top menu and select the People tab.    Clicking on a researcher's name takes you to his profile, which contains information about his institutional affiliation, his research areas, his network of contacts (co-authors, followers, people they follow), the publications he has uploaded to Academia.edu and the number of times he has been cited by other researchers on the platform, among other data.  CID DIGITAL INFORMATION COMPETENCES Academia.edu UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE 9   Clicking on the followers, following and co-authors links, you can discover more researchers in the same field. Once you have found a researcher you are interested in, you can follow his or her activity by clicking on the "Follow" button next to his or her name.    CID DIGITAL INFORMATION COMPETENCES L Academia.edu UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE 10   How to use Academia.edu to stay up to date   On the Academia.edu home page you will see the latest publications of the researchers you are following, as well as suggestions of other researchers you might be interested in following (Academics to follow), and a list of the latest publications you have consulted (Continue reading).  CID COMPETENCIAS EN INFORMACIÓN DIGITAL Academia.edu UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE 11   If you want to keep up to date with the latest publications from researchers you are interested in, you can activate email notifications. This option can be found under Account Settings > Email notifications, accessed via the drop-down menu that opens when you click on the arrow to the right of your profile picture in the top right-hand corner of the page. In the Your Network section, activate the option Someone you follow adds a new paper or video, as well as any other notifications you would like to receive by email.    From now on, every time a researcher in your network publishes a new document on Academia.edu, you will be notified by email.
