The purpose of the current paper is to identify the factors determining the budget deficit and their influence on
Romania's economic performance. The reason for choosing this theme was the fact that the issue of the budget deficit
is a current topic, both within the scientific community and among public decision-makers. Debates regarding the
optimal size of the government sector, its influence on economic growth, the effects of public debt and the budget
deficit on social welfare, the sustainability of fiscal and budgetary policies are still open
