The SETI Post-Detection Hub: Preparing for Discovery

Abstract

This paper introduces the SETI Post-Detection Hub, which was officially launched at the University of St Andrews in 2022. Its purpose is to explore and develop serious and integrated approaches in preparation for a potential discovery event in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) - that is, we consider the management of the consequences of a successful SETI detection of extraterrestrial life or culture. We consider possibilities for the research community (across SETI and wider) to support a broader and more comprehensive engagement with post-detection issues. The Hub recognises the necessity of research that cuts across University and institutional boundaries. From the outset, we will weave together insights from diverse fields, including governance and the humanities. The paper aims to outline the Hub’s origins, motivations, and initial undertakings, as well as the rationale for such an endeavour
