Folley served as the Medical Director of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC)from 1950 to 1951, during his leave of absence from the Hichcock Clinic, Hanover, New Hampshire. TheAtomic Bomb Casualty Commission was authorized by directive of the President of the United States in1946. During the same year it was established under the auspices of the National Research Council withthe support of the Atomic Energy Commission for the purpose of studying long-term medical effects ofthe atomic bombs exploded in Japan in 1945. In 1948 the ABCC initiated the first survey of the incidenceof leukemia in populations exposed to high energy radiation by the explosion of an atomic bomb. Folleypublished his report on the incidence of leukemia in the survivors of the bombing in Hiroshima andNagasaki in the American Journal of Medicine in 1952.Folley was born August 25, 1913, in Syracuse, New York. He graduated from Harvard Medical School.His medical training included Mary Hitchock Memorial Hospital, New Haven Hospital, and University ofPennsylvania. Dr. Jarrett H. Folley's major interest was in the field of internal medicine. Jarrett H. Folley,M.D. served as the President of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, Hanover, New Hampshire from 1964 to1974. In the archival manuscript collectionsdonated by other former ABCC members are reports and articles written or coauthored by Dr. Folley. Also,in the photograph collection are numerous black and white photographs of Dr. Folley posing with nurses andfellow physicians.
