Abstract

The influence of temperature and moisture on the microscopic damage evolution in quasi-isotropic carbon/ epoxy laminates is investigated. Tensile tests of three types of specimens are carried out under hygrothermal conditions. Some specimens are unloaded at various stresses to obverve the damage state microscopically and measure the transverse crack density and delamination area. Stress distributions under tensile loading are calculated in terms of the lamination theory and three-dimensional finite element method taking into account the hygrothermal residual stresses. The damage process under each hygrothermal condition can be explained by considering the residual stresses and critical stresses for damage generation.1.
