Phenotypic variability in the population of the invasive crab Charybdis hellerii (Milne Edwards, 1867) (Decapoda: Portunidae) in the continental margin of the Colombian Caribbean

Abstract

Las especies invasoras representan una amenaza para la mayoría de los ecosistemas en el mundo, sin embargo, los organismos que son capaces de establecerse en áreas fuera de su zona de origen cuentan con estrategias de historia de vida que les permiten ser exitosas en la colonización. En Colombia se ha reportado un número alto de especies invasoras, dentro de las cuales se encuentran crustáceos como la jaiba espinosa Charybdis hellerii, originaria del Indo-Pacífico y proveniente del Mar Mediterráneo, presuntamente por medio de embarcaciones de comercio. Actualmente, este cangrejo se ha reportado desde la zona de la alta Guajira hasta el Golfo de Morrosquillo, mostrando éxito como invasor para poder soportar las diversas condiciones del Caribe colombiano. En el presente estudio se evaluó la variabilidad fenotípica por medio de morfometría geométrica, comparando y analizando el caparazón de ejemplares recolectados en diferentes localidades (La Guajira, Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Santa Marta, Córdoba y Sucre) del nororiente y el suroccidente de la costa Caribe colombiana. Se determinó que, con el uso de esta estructura, no fue posible observar dimorfismo sexual, sin embargo, se detectaron evidencias (ANOVA; p<0.05; p=7.58x10-12) que indican variabilidad fenotípica entre los diferentes sitios de muestreos. En el departamento de La Guajira se obtuvieron las mayores tallas, lo cual se atribuye principalmente a los fenómenos de surgencia y a la naturaleza hidrográfica que presenta esta zona. Con respecto a la forma, se determinó que los individuos de esta parte de Colombia también muestran diferencias significativas en contraste al resto de lugares muestreados. Este estudio se destaca como un primer panorama sobre el estado de esta especie invasora en el territorio colombiano, y de cómo se ha podido adaptar mediante la plasticidad fenotípica a su nuevo medio.Invasive species represent a threat to ecosystems in the world, however, organisms capable of establishing themselves in areas outside their place of origin have life history strategies that allow them to be successful in colonization. A high number of invasive species have been reported in Colombia, among which are crustaceans such as the spiny crab Charybdis hellerii, native from Indo-Pacific and coming from the Mediterranean Sea, presumably by means of trade vessels. Currently, this crab has been reported from the upper Guajira area to the Gulf of Morrosquillo, showing success as an invader in order to withstand the diverse conditions of the colombian Caribbean. In the current study, the phenotypic variability was estimated using geometric morphometry, comparing and analyzing the shell of specimens collected in different localities (La Guajira, Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, Santa Marta, Córdoba and Sucre) of the northeast and southwest of the Colombian Caribbean coast. It will be extended that, with the use of this structure, it was not possible to observe sexual dimorphism, however, evidence was detected (ANOVA; p<0.05; p=7.58x10-12) indicating phenotypic differences between the different test sites. The largest sizes was reported in the localitie of La Guajira, which is mainly attributed to upwelling phenomena and the hydrographic nature of this area. Regarding the form, it was determined that individuals from this part of Colombia also show significant differences in contrast to the rest of the sampled places. This study stands out as a first overview of the status of this invasive species in Colombian territory, and how it has been able to adapt through phenotypic plasticity to its new environment.MaestríaMagíster en Ciencias–Biologí
