Abstract
This work is part of the field of the historiographic approach to Geography in Uruguay. It aims to contribute to the knowledge of the historical and institutional context from which the Association of Geographers of Uruguay (AGU) emerged, the causes that motivated the grouping and formation of that academic community, investigate who were the intervening actors, what were the motivations for which were grouped together and reveal the epistemological reasons that sustained and consolidated it.He sought to investigate the origins of the AGU, revealing the historical causes that motivated its creation, the foundations that sustained it as an academic community and the formalized instruments of internal and external legitimation. Qualitative methodological strategies are used: critical discourse analysis and historical reconstruction method, taking the Uruguayan Journal of Geography as the collection unit.El presente trabajo se inscribe en el campo del abordaje historiográfico de la Geografía en Uruguay. Pretende aportar al conocimiento del contexto histórico e institucional desde el que emergió la Asociación de Geógrafos del Uruguay (AGU), e indagar las causas que motivaron la conformación de esa comunidad académica, investigando quiénes fueron los actores intervinientes, cuáles fueron las motivaciones por las que se agruparon y develando las razones epistemológicas que la sostuvieron y la consolidaron, así como los instrumentos de legitimación interna y externa formalizados. Se utilizaron estrategias metodológicas cualitativas: el análisis crítico del discurso como herramienta para la recolección de evidencia empírica y el método de reconstrucción histórica como instrumento de análisis de la información. La colección de nueve ejemplares de la Revista Uruguaya de Geografía como unidad de recolección. Los resultados obtenidos permitieron definir el perfil del Geógrafo, reconocer liderazgos dentro del campo disciplinar y el fundamento epistemológico de referencia
