INTERVAL REPORT 34CHECKLIST OF FISHES OCCURRING IN THE LAKE WASHINGTON DRAINAGER.S. WydoskiUniversity of WashingtonINTRODUCTIONThe following checklist of fishes occurringlin the Lake Washingtondrainagehas been modified from Ajwani (1956:23-25).Scientiic and common names arearranged phylogenetically as listed in Bailey (1970),'References pertainingto additions to the list are footnoted with the species name.Thirty-five species have been reported in the drainage -- 23species are nativewhile ten other species have been Introduced and have become established.Ajwani listed several species of doubtful occurrence. One of these, the chumsalmon, has been introduced and may become established through theactivitiesof Dr. Lauren R. Donaldson, College of Fisheries, Universityof Washington.During the fall of 1970, two pink salmon entered the Universityof Washingtonhatchery pond, constituting the first record of this species at thepond.Other species that were listed by Ajwani have been eliminated fromthe listif they have not been collected during sampling byUniversity of Washingtonstudies. A question mark indicates that the species has not beensampled butmight be present.Two species have been added to the list recently.A longfin smelt populationis of particular interest since this is the first record of a land-lockedpopulation. The growth rate of thesesmelt is equal to or greater than thatof,anadromous populations (Dryfoos, 1965).Also of interest is an undescribedcottid that has adapted to a pelagic existence In Lake Washington from theusual benthic habits of the family (Ikusemiju, 1967). Dr. Carl E.
