This increase was14% that of the control forTSSM and 10%for YSM. Infested leaves hadstatistically similar rateofC02 assimilation asthe control. This increase may indicate a compensation response that theplant use to counter environmental stresses suchas spider mite injury. There was no statisticaldifference between C02assimilation rates ofplants infested byeither species.Measurements of chlorophyll a fluorescence indicated thatspider mites feeding increased variablefluorescence (Fv) and quenching fluorescence (Fq) of infested leaves.Spider mites feeding also decreasedchlorophyll contentof infested leaves.There was no significant relationship between the number ofmites and any ofthe photosynthetic orchlorophyll fluorescence parameters.145
